Ascetic (2005) - Sen's debut album

Feeling a bit camera shy

SEN, the brainchild of artist Michael Cates began where he did, in the warmhearted cold of Minneapolis. Better experienced than heard Cates uses varied instrumentation; synths and samples vie for attention competing with classic overdriven guitars and hard and fast drumbeats. SEN whips up extraordinary sounds that blend the industrial with the organic. Cates' intimate lyrics inspired by his life and his loves, breathe in and out of the music, whispering his influences. Romantic poets such as Keats, Shelley and Lord Byron give his music a taste of Gothic romance mixed in with the rebellious influences of Rimbaud and Jim Morrison.

ASCETIC, the debut album is dark and aggressive with tender undertones. Filled with ambiance, textures, and imagery. The music is a mix of angst and rebellion, centered around feelings of love, lust, sadness, infatuation, beauty, pain, and anger. It has a theme of being lost... lost on society, lost on love, and struggling to somehow find a way out.

During the recording process Jason Mackenroth was brought in to play the drums. Mackenroth's experience playing with Mother Superior and the Rollins Band brought an energy to the recording and a needed bit of real organic punk rock flavor . The mix of electronics, guitars and his bombastic playing seemed to mix exponentially. Becoming larger than it's parts.

When Jason Saracco joined SEN on guitar, adding his tasty technical wizardry taking inspiration from Black Sabbath to Bjork, the band's live show began to take shape.

"SEN is searching and struggling with things that are broken and beautiful. Floating through a stylized world. It's always been like a private movie projector with scenes running through my mind. Sometimes floating or lingering. Sometimes chaotically spinning into darkness, anxiety, and obsessions." - m.cates
