"Sensory Motor, May '04"

The five songs on Sensory Motor’s self-titled EP start with a slow burn and end with the kind of heat that comes from passionate lovers engaged in either a relationship destroying argument or a rekindling act of love. This San Francisco based four-piece features the vocals of Sylvia Roberts, which can be aesthetically cool as winter‘s chill, yet breathily warm. Typical of their sound, “So Long” begins with a thick, slow guitar set against a delicate vocal delivery, followed by a brief rumble from the drums and a surge from the guitar and bass. Then there’s another surge as the song crescendos into a chorus with forceful vocals about a physically, or is it emotionally, distant lover. “Arrow,” a heater from the get-go with a tensely catchy guitar riff, is a fitting disc closer.

Bio

The music of San Francisco’s Sensory Motor is like muddied ocean waves relentlessly massaging your cells then subtly or suddenly ripping them apart to spotlight the insides. Sylvia Roberts’ voice has a wooing quality that gently vibrates into your ears and bones. Inevitably as the emotion fluxuates and turns inside out, her tone takes on a lecturing force or at times a sudden angst resolving screech. This sensitized intensity and Sensory Motor’s sound is held afloat by the uncompromising guitar which moves from melodic moments of introspective jubilance to a pure heaviness that plods straight into your lungs and a rhythm section which forcefully and intricately holds it’s own. This hybrid results in a fresh sound, as always drawn from those who came before—Led Zeppelin, Fugazi, Tool, Massive Attack, yet layered together and wooed by a sweetness that creates an all together new sound.
