""Sex and Violins""

Sex & Violins – “Sex & Violins” Review by Dr. Music

Sex and violins; think about those two things for a minute. Sex has got to be the single most desirable physical sensation known to mankind. At its best, it's an intense and intimate ride that ends with every nerve ending screaming in ecstasy. Violins; delicate instruments that need to be caressed gently at times, but also need to be violently stroked occasionally to drive them to dizzying heights. When you think about it, sex and violins are similar in many ways. Here is a band that embraces their name and translates their music to fit the two elements.

Vocalist/bassist Lynn Sorensen reeks of raw sexuality here. Whether he's pumping the neck of his fretless bass during "You've Got Me Addicted" or spewing forth his suave slurs during the verses of "Eva," Sorensen captures the essence of the band name in every breath he takes. It just so happens that Sorensen is the violin player in the band, too. So when he belts out "You run my bow down the small of your back, you're a night at the opera, you're a sheer heart attack" during the chorus of their namesake tune, "Sex & Violins," it's an effective foray into the attitude of the band's music. This chorus also sheds some light upon some of the influences at work here; with "night at the opera" and "sheer heart attack" referencing two classic Queen records.

This is a classic rock record, plain and simple. Sorensen sings with strength and passion, sounding like James "JY" Young of Styx or Ian Astbury of The Cult (especially on "Feelin' Alright"). He also delivers some wicked bass lines throughout the disc. But the buck doesn't stop at Sorensen and his animal magnetism. Drummer Jeff Kathan drives each of these songs with a tight snare snap and a bottom heavy bass drum. He provides a concrete foundation that has Sorensen's bass dancing all over it. And then there's the guitars….Joe Shikany and Ian Crawford give us some heart stopping solo work on tunes like "Eva," "Str8 2 Hell," and "Feelin' Alright," but I think it's their patience that deserves to be noticed. They never attack the song and smother it, but rather let the song come to them. The subtle strings of "Outside Your Door" and "Beyond These City Lights" are played perfectly; and instead of jarring solos, Shikany and Crawford provide the song with more of an atmospheric elegance. These are guitar players that know when to play.

From the hard and heavy sound of songs like "Las Vegas Rocks" and "Str8 2 Hell," to the rap/rock of "Tears Fall Astray," to the sensitive innocence of "How to Love You;" this is just plain fun. It's nothing groundbreaking. They aren't trying to reinvent the wheel or anything. This band is a modern day Van Halen; a good time, party band that just kills instrumentally. I must say, that after hearing of Sorensen's accomplishments with the violin, I did yearn to hear more of his playing when the disc was over. But other than that, I think The Stones put it best when they said, "It's only rock and roll, but I like it."

"Sex and Violins Debut Release"

Review from The Atomic Chaser / All Access Magazine

Sex And Violins debut release is a phenomenal piece of work. There are several different musical styles here and the band have pulled off the impressive task of cooking it all up into a flavorful gumbo of sound that you're not likely to mistake for anyone else. At the same time, they have enough rock bottom elements in their music to be accessible to most anyone who stumbles across them. An outstanding debut release by and amazing rock band. SEX and VIOLINS could very well become a force to reckoned with in modern rock. Hats off to Lynn Sorensen and the rest of the band, for one hell of an amazing job! - The Atomic Chaser, THE DRP/All Access Magazine

"In Sin City - Sex Sells"

In Sin City, sex sells and the hit that creates the long awaited new Vegas Anthem in “Las Vegas Rocks” cannot be ignored.

With tunes like “I’m On Fire,” “Feelin’ Alright” and “You’ve Got Me Addicted,” Sex And Violins gives us the best sex we ever had...I’m come-ing back begging for more......please give it to us.
Lynn Sorensen’s ability to deliver hard melodic words from behind and up your short skirt with vocal-dog-lick techniques will kiss you on the face and cut you to the bone. He builds throaty vocals to an unperceivable and unexpected climax never experienced before.

With tunes like “How To Love You” and “Beyond These City Lights,” this sex rock has girls soaking in the feeling.

Sex And Violins...it’s SEX...it’s a BAND...it’s a FREIGHT TRAIN...and it’s COMING to you! Want it! Need it! Choose it! Come aboard!

"Sex And Violins"

SEX AND VIOLINS/Sex And Violins (Nightmare/Koch)
by Matt "Louder Than You" Johnson, ManSplat Magazine Issue 42

Swampy glam rock, like bluesy Whitesnake with a soul. And Goddamnit, it's about time someone sprinkled some violin in with their metal. No, I wasn't joking, chimp. If I was the president of music (I don't start until Thursday. After that...watch it!), I'd mandate that all guitar players learn the violin. Then I'd force all the raggaeton bands to fight all the Emo bands to the death with scoop shovels and make Gwen Stefani eat the remains. Sex And Violins is playing the pit. Grab a weapon and a beer-it'll be a helluva party!

Bio

Sex And Violins…the scream of ecstasy, the whisper of the heart. It’s the beat of the tormented soul, the caress of a longing hand. It’s the sparkle in a child’s eye, the dark of a wind from hell. The black, the white, the laugh, the cry. It’s life, it’s here and it’s in front of you. TAKE IT!

Lynn Sorensen (lead vox/violin) and Jeff Kathan (drums) had been touring the world with legendary rock vocalist Paul Rodgers (Free, Bad Company, The Firm and Queen) as the rhythm section in his solo band. In the summer of ‘06, Shane Valdez of Realm Films out of Las Vegas recruited the two to record music for upcoming feature film projects. After the first session in Las Vegas, making it a band was the only choice. Sex And Violins was born.

By December of ‘06, Sex And Violins was shooting the video for the title track Sex And Violins. It was directed by Shane’s son Ryan Valdez (Panic at the Disco, Tool, Nora Jones and Jet) on film in two days on location in Las Vegas. With high energy and raw passion, this video gives you a unique visual look into the compulsion that drives a young woman’s sexual appetite to the point where she must take the trophy at all costs. And take it, she does!

In July 2007, Lynn and Jeff brought on long-time friends, guitarist and back-up vocalist, Joe Shikany (Paul Rodgers), and bass player, Evan Sheeley (TKO, Q5). Lynn and Jeff went on tour through Europe and the US with Paul Rodgers for the summer. Off the road, Lynn spent every spare second finishing all the vocals, mixing and mastering in his home studio in Seattle. In October 2007, Sex And Violins was signed to Dead Famous Artists. CD pegged for world-wide release in 2008. This CD is truly “hot off the press.”

Meet each member:

Lynn Sorensen:
Lynn Sorensen is the co-founder of Sex And Violins. Lynn is the voice, the violin, and the producer for the self-titled debut. He’s burnin’ inside with a lot to say…take the time…give him a listen.

From the Barrowlands in Scotland, to the Royal Albert Hall in London, to the Georgia Dome in Atlanta, to BB Kings in New York, to the Ryman in Nashville, to the Sidney Superdome, Lynn has toured Europe, Japan, Australia and North America with Paul. As Lynn puts it, "You have the worlds premier rock vocalist touching the hearts of millions, and I'm a part of it! He just gets better with age. He has inspired me to realize that no matter how long you do this or how accomplished you are at your craft you should always challenge yourself. It makes no difference how many gigs and sessions I do with Paul it is always a deep musical pleasure to hear that man sing!" After spending much of 2005 touring the world as frontman for Queen, Paul is back with his solo band. Lynn toured Japan with Paul (with Nils Lofgren and Howard Leese on guitars) in the Summer of 2006 and the UK in October 2006. A full DVD of the Glasgow Scotland show entitled Paul Rodgers Live At Glasgow is currently available in stores worldwide. It charted #1 in the UK and Canada and #3 in the US. Lynn has just finished touring the States and Europe with Paul through the Spring, Summer and Fall of 2007.
