BandJazzFunk

SFI is a group of jazz-trained musicians under the age of 22 interested in advancing a genre of progressive funk, bridging jazz and intelligent dance music. Communication is key. We aspire to create a dialogue between ourselves and the audience, engaging concepts of improvisation & feedback loops.

Biography

SFI is a group comprised of members all trained in Jazz music. With this creative context, we are mindful and influenced by past and present movements of funk, electronic and intelligent dance music which can infect the communication and improvisational elements of jazz.

We desire not to always directly show complexity, but instead allow it to emerge naturally from as we individually and collectively embed these styles into the music. We are very concerned, also, with the future of this new genre that is developing between jazz and electronic, in the most recent EP, Co/axial, we venture more into ambient transitions that are influenced by artists such as Aphex Twin, seeking to hybridize ambient music's textures and periodicity with aspects of jazz music such as time tempo changes and heavy communication between musicians.

"Playing off of one another" is not a fragment, but an common thread, and standard, in all of our music. We feel communication is everything in progressing the music we'd like to make. We thrive in live situations, interacting with each other, and the audience to form a feedback loop and sharing our experience through musical narrative.
