"The Croc Rocks with hip hop concert"

July 25, 2008 02:31 PM - Meadowvale hip-hop artist Cody Ervin will be representing his hometown when he performs at a charity concert happening next week in Mississauga.
Ervin, who performs under the stage name Kody, will be joined by DJ Dr. Deff, SG Ink featuring Freeky T, Jae Lee who performs as Syco and Toronto's ill vibes as well as L.S from L.O.D Development for the Hip Hop At The Croc concert. It happens on Tuesday at Crocodile Rock located in the Hurontario St./Eglinton Ave. area.
Funds raised from the event will be donated to Port Credit Secondary School's music department to enhance its strings program.
Ervin has been busy recording and mixing a pair of singles at Mississauga's Metalworks Studio. Both tracks, The Lab and Have Faith, are already available for preview at www.myspace.com/kodyfromsgink.
Also included on the website are the tracks My Way featuring Grips, Read Between the Lines, All That Mattered and Life is a Merry Go Round.
The teen's using the songs to promote himself while he records his 14-track debut album for his label, Suburban-Ghetto Ink. Ervin hopes to release it this fall.
"I want to bring a brand new sound to the industry," the Grade 10 student at Our Lady of Mount Carmel previously told The News. "The Lab (recently) came out and I think it shows my lyrical side. It's about a kid who spends all his time in the basement working on his music. What I like about (hip-hop) is that you can express yourself in a stylish manner."
The acts ill vibes and L.O.D. Development have opened for artists such as Method Man, Obie Trice, Bedouin Soundclash, Kardinal Offishall, Choclair and Red1. Fans can expect ill vibes to perform tracks from the upcoming album T.O.D.A.Y.
The concert is being organized by students from the Metalworks Institute of Sound and Music Production. The students also organized another charity concert earlier this month at the Muddy Moose Tap Bar & Grill to raise funds for Spread The Net.
Show time is 8:30 p.m.
Tickets cost $4. They can be purchased at Metalworks Institute or Crocodile Rock. - The Mississauga News

"Hip-hop artist looks to bust a move"

May 15, 2008 02:04 PM - Feeling like he's already got Meadowvale locked-down, local hip-hop artist Cody Ervin is ready to bring his sound to a larger audience.
Ervin, who performs under the stage name Kody, has been busy recording and mixing a couple of singles at Metalworks Studio. Both tracks, The Lab and Have Faith, are already available for preview at www.myspace.com/kodyfromsgink.
He's using the songs to promote himself while he records his 14-track debut album for his label, Suburban-Ghetto Ink. Ervin hopes to release it this fall.
"I want to bring a brand new sound to the industry," said the Grade 10 student at Our Lady of Mount Carmel. "The Lab just came out and I think it shows my lyrical side. It's about a kid who spends all his time in the basement working on his music. What I like about (hip-hop) is that you can express yourself in a stylish manner."
Ervin has known he wanted to be a rapper since he was a youngster. He wrote and recorded his first single, Remember the Name, when he was just 13.
"I've always been really serious about music," he said. "I started freestyling and battling around school and then I was writing and recording more songs."
Like many young men, Ervin was enrolled in sports. However, he gave up athletic pursuits to focus on his music.
"Basically, I didn't have the drive for sports like I did for music," said Ervin, 15. "It feels amazing to be doing this and I feel like I'm getting somewhere. I get home from school and I'm in the studio. My whole summer (last year) was straight music. School and music was basically my life."
Lyrically, Ervin sticks to what he knows.
"The music portrays me and I'm not trying to act like someone I'm not," said Ervin, citing Lupe Fiasco, Kanye West and Toronto's Point Blank as some of his influences.
"I'm not a thug or gangster, and I try to relate to everyone. It's exciting how far you can go and how creative you can get with the music." - The Mississauga News

Bio

SG Ink was founded on the Suburban Streets of Mississauga Ontario, to be more specific The Woodlands. The Woodlands notoriously known as Tha Woods would serve as the Breeding ground for many troubled youths and also Conrad"Grips"McRae.

Formally known as Rubber Grips, Grips began writing poetry at the early age of 8. This poetry would grab the attention of his teachers who encouraged him to read and write more. These early teachings would be the foundation in which Grips would begin laying his Bricks. In the early 90's the pop rock and Hip Hop culture influenced Grips into rapping and preforming. The "Thriller" album by Micheal Jackson would be the determing factor in the decision to pursue a career in Music. Grips quotes"It was at that time hearing Micheal Jackson that I truly fell in love with music". It would be many years later, and years of deveolpment with the help of producer friend Pama Sarai that Grips would put out his first Ep, called "PHO PHAT JOINTS" in Dec 1999. This would be the beggining of a series of events that will take you to the present.

After the release of "PHO PHAT JOINTS" Grips recruited fellow friend ST.Hill and Bugsy and formed the group THA WOODSMEN and released their first single "Shiver". "Shiver" was a huge success and subsequently dropped "Dis-Go" which recieved a vidoefact grant in 2003 and is still on rotation on MuchMusic's RapCity and Vibe .Shortly after Tha Woodsmen went on a hiatus unable to fully capitalize on their success . Grips set along to start something new and different. In 2005 came SG INK which means SUBURBAN GHETTO Ink. SG Ink is a Lifestyle Company that encompasses everything from music, fashion, movies, dance and art.
SG Ink the group consist of Grips the main producer,ST.Hill,Freeky T and Kody. The Group represents all facets of life, each artist bring a new refreshing view to music, and will be the first to showcase BOX MUSIC to the world. BOX MUSIC invented by Grips is a form of music that is the building block for innovation. It forces artists to think out the box when creating. What is BOX MUSIC? Picture a box, it has four sides, each side is a different genre of music but Hip Hop/Rap is always one side. The other three sides must include three other genres of music, like rock, gospel and R and B.
I could be subtle but it has to be there. That is Box Music, and that what SG Ink is bringing. Fresh untainted music from the SUBURBAN GHETTO, and remember The Suburban Ghetto includes all and excludes none. You live in it.
