"#119 Review (Shand Walton and the All Amigos Club)"

ROUGH ENGLISH TRANSLATION:

Shand Walton is a musician from Austin, Texas, which has about 15 years in the box is. In 2003 he debuted with the instrumental album Ghost Town Favorites. Then followed another 2 discs. Walton now has an accompanying band, which he makes his first band album. Last year he was with his All Amigos Club in Amsterdam to work. His new album Rancho Motel Sessions will this month (April) will appear, and our staff had already sent a preview. On this disc are 4 songs with a nice mix of country, rock and swing. When listening to the first track I had the feeling that Eddie Hinton was raised back to life. The hoarse voice of raw Shand Walton has slightly away from the aforementioned white soul singer. Two Crackles is a nice leap country tune in the middle with a nice melodic guitar solo. There are also 2 two-step hot country songs to listen. Shand Walton's music is a bit like that of townsman Dave Insley. My interest is in any case raised this promocd of paper. In Austin, I decided once the group view. (PJ)

ORIGINAL:
(PJ)

"Sans labels, Shand Walton plays tonight at Riley's"

By HAP MANSFIELD
Scene Editor

Randy Newman is an extremely talented composer, but he just can't sing. Yeah, he's had a few hits ("Short People" and "I Love L.A." come to mind – painfully), but he's got no vinegar, no spice, no verve in his vocal chords.

If Randy Newman could sing, he'd sound a little bit like Shand Walton, who is appearing at Riley's Wednesday (9 p.m.) with his band, The All Amigos Club.

Walton is an enigma of the first water. His website, geocities.com/shandjw, links to a Buckminster Fuller site, an Eric Satie site, a site for surrealist artist Alonzo Smith, and Found magazine (devoted to random found messages and letters), as well as authors George Orwell, Robert Louis Stevenson and Jack London.

An intriguing link features pictures of fruit labels, the labels you find on pieces of produce. In Walton's case, the piece of fruit he's eating is more suitably labeled than he is. No category fully encompasses his talent or adequately describes him.

One writer called him "Credence Clearwater Revival with Norman Mailer handling the vocals" (the writer perhaps has never heard Norman Mailer speak, so let's assume he was just grasping wildly for an apt simile). Walton's version of "I'm Gonna Buy Me A Car," from his second album, Fifteen Songs in Popular Keys ( 2007 Toil and Trouble), was included on indie darling Daniel Johnston's website.

Walton rightfully claims Ruben Rodriguez and his Guadalajara Kings as one of his influences. Michael Molenda, editor of Guitar Player magazine, created an accolade just for him, the "Bravery on the Edge of Crazy" award. All of it put together make a cubist painting look like a Rand McNally roadmap. Shand Walton is just plain hard to sum up.

After fifteen years of being a one-man band (he can play a variety of instruments), The All Amigos Club is a slight departure from Walton's more personally expressive solo days. He assures fans that his one-man band days are not gone, just put into storage for a while. Meanwhile, Walton and The All Amigos Club are fresh off a successful tour of Germany, Holland and Belgium, which they completed at the end of September.

Walton has been compared to the great John Fahey and the similarities are certainly there. Walton playing "Cedar Tree Blues" on a little YouTube video vibrates with Fahey's unusual intensity. One half expects to see musical clouds envelope him and take him straight to heaven, like a guitar playing prophet Elijah.

In spite of all the heady talk of surrealists and biblical sages, Walton and The All Amigos Club play an infectious intermingling of Texas swing, blues, mariachi and rock. Other bands may have a similar mix, but the blend made by Shand Walton and the All Amigos Club is distinctly theirs. You can hear it for yourself at Riley's tonight.

“Stupid Blues”

The “Bravery on the Edge of Crazy” award this month goes to Shand Walton, who, when he was playing around the Bay Area, was one of the most naturally gifted electric guitarists I’d ever seen. Now, he’s doing a one-man band thingie in Texas, and it’s raw. Dare a listen, and be transported back to the juke joint days.

Bio

Shand Walton and the All Amigos Club play edgy Americana music, uniquely blending rock, folk, country, mariachi, and blues. This energetic trio includes Shand Walton on guitar and vocals, John Duer on bass, and Cameron Rogers on drums. The fall of 2008 brought acclaim for the band as they were warmly welcomed during their tour of Germany, Netherlands, and Belgium. In April 2008, the group released the EP album, Rancho Motel Sessions, on the Toil & Trouble record label in Austin, Texas. Currently, the group is recording a full-length album to be released by the fall of 2009.

Over the years, Shand has persisted in writing music and playing various instruments for anyone curious enough to listen. Michael Molenda, editor of Guitar Player magazine, awarded Shand Walton the “Bravery on the Edge of Crazy” award in January of 2007. He described Shand’s music as “raw” and encouraged readers to “dare a listen, and be transported back to the juke joint days.” Shand’s discography, on Toil & Trouble Records, includes Ghost Town Favorites (2003), Fifteen Songs in Popular Keys (2005), and On the Bend (2007). The second album includes Shand’s version of “I'm Gonna Buy Me a Car,” featured on the Daniel Johnston website.

John Duer has played the blues in East Austin and country music all over Texas. In addition, John has played rock, Dixieland jazz, Americana, 50s-style folk (a la Kingston Trio), and other music that can't easily be categorized. John’s main instrument is bass, and depending on the type of music, he either plays an electric upright or a 5-string electric bass guitar. In addition to his versatility in musical styles, John also provides back-up vocals for the All Amigos Club.

Born into a musical family from Amarillo, Texas, Cameron Rogers sang and played piano and coronet in his youth, but by the age of 19 had discovered his true love: the drums. In 1995, Cam decided to leave the Panhandle behind and pursue a musical career in Austin. Cam quickly formed his first band, Big Breakfast, an instrumental funky, jazzy dub group. By 2000, the band had morphed into SpaceTruck, playing psychedelic rock. They played the first two Austin City Limit Music Festivals, released two CD’s, and went on several cross-country tours. In the past few years, Cam has been doing extensive session work at Arlyn Studios, providing the rhythm tracks for many different artists.
