With a sound that is distinctively Australian, but has celtic roots fuelled by beer chugging choruses and the finest lyrics ranging from the sensitive to down right rowdy, these guys can be compared to the likes of Weddings Parties Anything, The Pogues & Flogging Molly.

Biography

If you wanted to sum up the music Shanks Pony plays into a general classification you could easily say it was folk/rock. But when you put four musicians on a stage with varying influences, one could look much deeper and say that their style is much more than that. This four piece band from Perth, Western Australia has celtic roots fuelled by beer chugging choruses, full-bosomed bar wenches and the finest lyrics ranging from the sensitive to down right rowdy. Shanks Pony is a band that knows how to have fun, and this is clearly seen on stage with their up-tempo music and rowdy antics. This unique sound can be compared to the likes of Weddings Parties Anything, The Pogues, Flogging Molly and to a lesser extent the Dropkick Murphys. With a Paul Kelly influence and a hint of the old Australian bush folk tunes, Shanks Pony is the new sound the Australian folk-revival has been looking for.

Shanks Pony's debut CD titled "A Year in a Pub" is set for release in March, 2007. Containing a total of eight tracks, six of which are their own originals is a great representation of what this band is all about. Not only has Shanks Pony spent the best part of a year (or so) in pubs plugging away at their music, the title track "A Year in a Pub" written by front man Pete Varcoe, is an absolute belter of a tune and is a true count of events that occurred in his life when his family owned a pub (The Yorkshire Stingo) in Melbourne, Australia. With a catchy tune and very moving lyrics, this song is one you'll be singing in your head for days. The CD also features songs about packing up your life in the country to move back to the city; a take on Australian business values; and Friday night pints with your mates. It also has a great modern rendition of an Aussie traditional bush tune "Lachlan Tigers" and some great harmony work in an old sea shanty "Whip Jamboree".

Shanks Pony are currently gigging within the city of Perth and Fremantle, but also like to spread their brand of music and head to the country areas. With a line-up of gigs at the Nannup Music Festival and some gigs in the areas of Quindanning and Denmark, you're bound to catch up with these guys soon.

Lyrics

A Year in a Pub

Written By: Pete Varcoe

Well dad broke his leg around Christmas time
And left us with all of the fun
Chins up and brave faces lets open the bar
Been down in the cellar and up before the sun
And up before the sun

Well the men wander in as if punching their cards, take up their positions each day
Eyes up to the telly and down to their draft, SP bookie’s on hand
Will they gamble their pensions away?
Will they gamble their pensions away?

Chorus
Let’s drink to the life of a city hotel
And let’s sing to the sway of the beers
The stout and the Stingo the old black and tan
A year in a pub and I’ll always remember the tears
I will always remember the tears

Now mum takes the orders from those in the lounge, says the buffalo’s right on the mark
Gunna be a big Saturday she whispers to me as the black and white beanies stroll in from Victoria Park
Straight in from Victoria Park

But the profits are down and we work ‘til we’re dead, soldier on and do what we can
Another blue to break up and the cops need to talk, is this what you call some kind of retirement plan?
Some kind of retirement plan

Chorus

Oh sirns and flashes and a bang on the door on a freezing wet morning ’round three
There’s a customer down in the gutter outside and the short round detective, he pointed the finger at me
Yes he pointed the finger at me

Oh yes sir I know what you surely must think, but you’ll see in the plain light of day
That I never could be of the murdering kind and two long weeks later that customer she passed away
That customer she passed away

Chorus

So as long as my arse it points to the ground and I’ll tell it to all near and far
With the strife that my family had to endure, you’ll see me in the pub, only on this side of the bar
Only on this side of the bar

Let’s drink to the life of a city hotel
And let’s sing to the sway of the beers
The stout and the Stingo the old black and tan
A year in a pub and I’ll always remember the tears
I will never forget the tears
They’ve been with me for near twenty years
