Bio

Shannon Scott is a vocalist/composer from Red Deer, AB, and a graduate of Capilano College's Bachelor of Music program with a major in Jazz Voice and a minor in Piano. With a diverse background in performance, Shannon has performed in New York's Carnegie Hall with Phil Mattson in 2001, was accepted to perform at the International Association of Jazz Educators conference in 2002 with Take Note, and sang with the acclaimed vocal jazz group Nitecap under the direction of Réjean Marois, performing with such internationally renowned artists as Ed Thigpen, Jimmy Heath, Jean-Michel Pilc, and Kristen Korb. Shannon has performed on radio programs such as Sunday Night Jazz (CKUA), Sweet 'n' Hot (CITR) and Melodies in Mind (CJSF), and has appeared on CBC's Hockey Night in Canada; she was also the recipient of the 2002 Dee Daniel's Jazz Vocalist's scholarship, and is an active member of the music community with collaborations and studio work with local artists such as CR Avery and Colleen Savage.

The Shannon Scott Band, the foremost of her musical projects, is a Vancouver-based group of five of the city's most renowned jazz and folk musicians. The songwriting is sophisticated and satisfying to both the mind and ear with arrangements that vary from complex and verging on progressive rock to simple as a folk tune. The band finds a unique sound with its members: all rooted in jazz, each is influenced by a variety of genres that manifest in their playing. The lyrics evoke the poetry of artists such as Joni Mitchell, Leonard Cohen and W.B. Yeats, and are intimately engaging even upon repeated listening.

Among her other projects is Company B, an eight-piece swing band she co-founded in the style of the Andrews Sisters, fronted by a female vocal trio with two horns and a rhythm section. She also leads the Shannon Scott Quintet, a vehicle for her original jazz compositions and work as a lyricist, writing verse to instrumental jazz standards and modern jazz compositions.

"Shannon Scott has got the idea. Rather than jumping on the crooner Krall bandwagon, this talented young singer has an ear for real jazz and an instinct for improvisation. She's also a gifted wordsmith, penning original lyrics to compositions by jazz masters. Certainly an artist to keep your eye (and ear) on!"
~ Kate Hammett-Vaughan (Juno Award-nominated Jazz Vocalist)
