Shaun Ryan

Shaun Ryan

Shaun dazzles crowds not only with his songwriting ability, but also with his unique voice and harmonica playing. Shaun has heard comparisons to everything from Bob Dylan and Neil Young to John Mayer, Guster and Ryan Adams.

"When you wake up one day and decide you need to move 900 miles away, people are going to think you're pretty crazy," says singer-songwriter, Shaun Ryan. "But life has a strange way of making everything work out in the end."

As a small-town Wisconsin native from the Mississippi River Valley, Shaun draws on his Midwest roots to fuel his songs which make them remnants of the adventures that life has taken him on. "Songwriting is the only way I can truly express myself," states Ryan. "When I'm writing, I'm taken to the one place where I can react and reflect to what's going on in the world around me."

A songwriter of six years, Shaun Ryan's first self-taught instrument was the harmonica when he was 11; his second was the guitar at the age of 14. Not long after picking up a guitar, he was writing songs and evolving what has been described by many as a "smooth and honest" sound. With captivating rhythm guitar, warm harmonies, simple yet compelling melodies, his "tell-it-like-it-is" lyrical styling, and harmonica reminiscent of Dylan, Shaun has created a sound he can call his own. And, people are starting to listen in!

Following a stint as co-frontman for Westwood Rain and the release of their first album, No Turning Back, in April 2004, Ryan moved to Minneapolis. After a period of self-realization, Shaun headed to Nashville to immerse himself in his craft; this move echoes his writing philosophy: "The key to maturing as a singer-songwriter is stepping outside the world as you know it to try new things."

The past couple years have proven unpredictable for the young twenty-something. "If you were to have told me two years ago that I'd be living in Nashville and recording an album, I would have said you were insane. I always thought I'd lead the 'normal' college life, get a job as an architect, get married, raise a family, and grow old; but, my life has literally taken a 180," states Ryan. Whether he is getting physically and emotionally assaulted by a 1970s rock icon on the Grammy Red Carpet or starting his own record label, Shaun isn't leading the "normal" life he once envisioned.

With the release of his debut solo album, Shaun Ryan captures the album's essence when he sings "Sometimes life doesn't go as planned/and you'd like to go back to where it began/change the past with what you now know/but even when you press rewind/you're still running out of time." Says Ryan, "I'm very pleased with how this album turned out. It's a lyrical reflection of the journey I've been on the last couple years."

Someday Soon

Written By: Shaun Ryan

Wakeup don’t you see what’s going on
In the world we live in today
We build up walls to keep strangers away

But what makes a stranger anyway
Is it because they look different than you
Or worship a God in a different point of view

We’re not so different you and I
Despite the color of our skin
When all that matters is what we hold within

Even though our worlds are different
It makes no difference to me
When we kill the crow our worlds are gonna change
Someday soon we’re gonna see all our walls fall down

Well I don’t care who you’re sleepin’ with
I won’t tell you what you can’t do
But I do know this that some changes are long overdue

We’re not so different you and I
Despite the color of our skin
When all that matters is what we hold within

Someday soon we’re gonna see all our walls fall down

Now let’s take a stand and do what’s right
Bring together our fellow man
Live in peace and harmony like the clocks made of sand

(Chorus x2)
Someday soon we’re gonna see all our walls
Someday soon we’re gonna see all our walls fall down

With You

Written By: Shaun Ryan

I’m traveling on this old road; I’ve never been here before
The air on my fingertips leaves me wanting more

And I, I wanna be where you are
But we can’t be together, Cause we’re to far apart

She is the only one to make me feel this way
When she smiles at me, I loose all my words to say

And I, I wanna be with you
But we can’t be together, Cause we’re to far apart

This fork in the road is telling me
That I’m the one who must choose
My own destiny or if I want to stay behind

Now I’m driving forward and I can see my girl is standing there
She hops in and we take off without even a care

And I, I wanna be with you
Now we can be together, cause we’re not to far apart

One Way Ticket

Written By: Shaun Ryan

Says his goodbyes as his momma cries
To the only world he’s ever known
But it’s his time to move on
This one way ticket trains leaving today

Bags packed and it’s starting to snow
He remembers how beautiful this world is
His mom grabs his hand, she looks in his eyes
She says “You know you don’t have to go

But he says “Don’t worry for me
You know exactly where I’ll be

The room’s turned dark, and everything’s cold
They all know it’s only a matter of time
He says “It’s alright; things’ll be better this way
Where I’m going, the streets are paved with gold

In his final moments, he looks out the window
The sun comes out and pounds against his pain
They all know, it’s now his time
In his last few breaths he manages to say

“I know someday we’ll meet again
But until then remember me, please remember me
