"GRANDAD IS US INDIE GROUP'S TOP FAN"

A Mansfield grandad is bridging the generationa gap- and the Atlantic Ocean- to plug one of the USA's hottest pop prospects. Eighty three year old Victor Tooley admits the music of his American grandson's band The Wine Field may not be his cup of tea. But he is eager to see 27 year old grandson Shawn's Boston-based outfit hit the big time. Since forming four years ago, the band has signed a deal with EMI's Priority label, toured the US college circuit and been hailed by American music magazine Billboard as one of the best new indie bands. But apart from a clutch of Paris gigs, they are yet to make their European breakthrough- although the appearance of their track 'Man on a Mast' in the Channel Four series Dawson's Creek has helped raise their profile.
PROUD---
"I'm more than proud. I am, really, because I did not think anything like this would come about at all," said Mr. Tooley, of Baums Lane. "My grand-daughter is also very musical, and she and Shawn used to play together. This is the consequence of that. Im' extremely proud because I've got no musical talent."
In fact, Mr Tooley finds ballroom and sequence dancing at St Augustine's church hall, on Abbot Road, more to his taste. He didn't take to the band's powerpop sound at first...but with Shawn a star in the ascendancy, he is backing them all the way. "I've got about three of their CD's now. When they first set up I listened to them, but it wasn't my music. But now I like music in general because I do a lot of dancing," he explained. "I've been to see them live in America, at one of their gigs in Hartford, Connecticut, and, believe me, when they first started up my ears nearly blew out. But the music they're playing now is very good."
Vocalist, guitarist, and violinist Shawn was in Mansfield last week after taking a break from his hectic touring schedule to catch up with his Grandad. He told Chad he was keen for the group to play live in the UK. "We want to do a tour in England sometime and try to hit the major cities. Right now, it looks like we're having a good shot in the States," he said. The four piece began as an acoustic duo moving to Boston from New York City via Portland, Maine. "We used to play in the streets for apartment money to start it up because we were pretty broke. We basically got across the US and got onto a good agent who took a chance on us. Since then, they have turned electric after the label decided it would boost their popularity. Said Shawn "So far they've been right about it. Things look good." - THE CHAD/NOTTINGHAM, ENGLAND
