"Shayna Sands to Perform Saturday Night at Disc Go Round"

CORPUS CHRISTI - Cliff House Records, an independent record label in Corpus Christi, is hosting a show featuring local artist Shayna Sands on Saturday night at Disc Go Round.

Sands is a Houston native but moved to Corpus Christi with her family at age 2 and started playing guitar when she was 12.

"At first I wanted to play metal music like Metallica," Sands said. " When I was 17, I got into Bob Dylan and I started paying attention to the song writing process."

Sands moved to New York shortly after high school to pursue her music career and frequently played shows in New Jersey, Brooklyn and Manhattan.

After five years in the Big Apple, Sands decided to come back home.

"I had a great experience in New York but I missed Corpus and my family," Sands said. "It feels great to be home. Corpus has a neat supportive theme for local talent and I love that."

Since Sands has been back in the Coastal Bend, she continues to perform at venues around town including at ArtWalk, GoGo Corpus Christi thrift store and Tango Tea Room.

Mariella Perez, promotion manager at Disc Go Round, said the store's mission is to support local talent and get residents aware of what the city has to offer.

Sands also has traveled to Victoria and San Marcos to perform, and hopes to add Austin to the list soon.

"She has real talent," said Victoria Mireles, 104.5 Classic Rock disc jockey. "She writes her own music, plays several instruments and her voice is raw. I have a deeper voice myself so it's nice to hear another female with the same voice."

Sands describes her music as a blues-based rock with soul.

"Duran Krenshaw, a guitarist I met in New York, is one of my biggest inspirations," Sands said. "He puts so much attitude and soul in his performances, and I try to keep him in mind when I, myself, am performing."

Sands' goal is ultimately to travel the world and play shows, but she said she's satisfied working with children at the Jewish Community Center and playing shows locally.

Sands, along with drummer Chris Yassi, will perform Saturday with the Blind Owls, Enter/Exit, and Electronic Meditation.

Shayna Sands is a passionate singer-songwriter from Texas that made her way to New York in 2009 to jam in bands and explore the music scene. She’s a versatile rock artist with a killer voice and her new single, Can’t Turn Back, shows just one of her many styles!

I’ve had the pleasure of meeting Shayna Sands about 4 years ago while I was attending school for audio engineering. Truly a dedicated musician and influenced by the likes of Eric Burden, Jim Morrison, Etta James, and John Mayall, Shayna has a versatile genre of music from intimate acoustic performances to a blues vibe like Can’t Turn Back, which is only one of the tracks off her upcoming EP this Friday!

"Hot Rocker: The Southern Wild Child"

This wild child's crazy mane of curls wildly piled on top of her head, sets the tone of her rocker rebellious side.

Not only does Sands have a wild streak but is incredibly talented when it comes to singing, playing the guitar, and the harmonica all together - which makes her even more intriguing.

"Bob Dylan has been a huge influence of mine," Sands said.

The female version of Bob Dylan is definitely what comes to mind when you see her play, and her rebellious attitude makes her even sexier.

"I don't feel like you should constrict yourself to social standards," Sands said. "I'm really sort of crazy and I don't feel like there's a limit to things sometimes."

She really doesn't limit herself to standards, and is proving it by taking a break from college to pursue her musical ambition.

"I'm taking a creativity sabbatical from school in San Marcos and going to New York live with friends," Sands said. "All I want to do there is jam and concentrate on my music."

You really never know what to expect from this rebel with out a cause, which makes her our irresistible southern wild child. - Corpus Christi Caller Times
