When Shelby sings, people stop what they're doing and listen. This versatile singer/songwriter can really shine on everything from soft Country, to groovy R&B, to a driving Rock tune. Coming out of a small town ( Salmon Arm, BC), this Russian Canadian started off dancing in Just for Kicks for six years before she became involved in singing and acting in musicals. In high school, Shelby started writing her own sassy tunes with her dad's acoustic guitar. While developing her guitar skills, she realized her musicality could take her places.
After graduating high school (she successfully auditioned and performed an original composition at her Grad Ceremony) with a Recognition award in Music, Shelby knew right away where she needed to be. Two months later, Shelby moved to Nelson, BC, and attended an intense three year program at Selkirk Music College. She was taking 13 classes a semester at one point, focusing on Performance in a variety of Ensembles and Bands, Arranging, Songwriting, History of Jazz/Rock, Vocal labs, Vocal lessons, Keyboard Lab and Lessons, Ear Training, Harmony (theory), Composition, and more. After three years, she graduated with a Diploma in Music, Majoring in Performance. Shortly after, Shelby moved to Vancouver to pursue her career in music, performing a variety of covers and her amazingly unique originals.
Shelby's infectious, strong, bubbly personality is apparent in all her high-energy performances. She will move the crowd with her heart-felt tunes, slow ballads, and sassy persona.
"I hope to continue to truly touch my audience through my songs and through my performance. I have great determination to inspire people to speak about their true beliefs," says Shelby. This talented, down-to-earth songwriter strongly believes in voicing her feelings, and anyone who listens to Shelby's music will tell you she does just that.
Shelby has been a featured artist for diverse bands such as Hammerhead, who are famous for their Funky Progressive Rock, singing Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Babe Ruth, Yes, Rush, and more, and The Accidentals, who play R&B, Country, Rock and Pop. A compassionate songwriter; Shelby creates a mix of alternate Rock, R&B and Country with a unique twist. Not only does she fuse styles and genres, she also has the ability to jump from different genres of music (Hip-Hop, Rap, Pop, Indie, Folk) and still have the same passion for every style she's singing, and you can hear this in her music.
"I really love a lot of different types of music; therefore, my style is very versatile. Whether it's Rap, Rock, R&B, Soul, Folk, Blues or Country, I put my own spin on songs to try make them interesting. I love to branch out and learn new styles and explore new heights; therefore, I compose songs that are either a compilation of many styles, or I will compose songs that are each of a different but distinct genre," she explains. Shelby furthers her explanation: " I'm Country/Folk because it comes out naturally in my vocal delivery, phrasing and my lyrics. I'm Rock because I have an 80's belt (so I'm told), and pure but raspy voice, which comes across as edgy. I'm R&B because I sing and project with soul, compose full background vocal harmonies, and my music is groovy and contains lyrics and melodies that are bluesy.
To further describe the emotions behind her lyrics, Shelby adds that she always wants to "leave the audience on a positive note". She has many songs that are deep, raw and vulnerable but include optimism within the story. Through her meaningful lyrics and slightly ambiguous chord progressions, Shelby's music really reflects who she is as a person; because like her music, Shelby is unique, believable, somewhat mysterious and most importantly, real.
