Shelby Lamb is "a folk singer with a rock spirit, balanced by such elegance and poise. The music itself, is just drenched in endearing warmth, which at one point hit me with such emotion" (-The Lonely Vagabond)

Biography

Shelby Lamb captivates: from the first note of her warm voice "like sugar-cane smoke", she fills the room with a rich, earthy sound and songs full of keen observation and raw spirit.

Shelby grew up in the small Ontario towns of Creemore and Collingwood. As a young person, she was influenced by such eclectic songwriters as Joni Mitchell and Serge Gainsbourg. She obtained a post-secondary education in music studying voice, but her potential was not fulfilled until she began to write her own songs after teaching herself to play guitar and piano.

Suburban Cowboy, Shelby's debut EP, was recorded at Ivy Laine Studio by Toronto based musician and reputable producer Jesse Laine. The album was released on the independent label, Familiar Music, conceived by a close group of musicians, Shelby, Megan Hamilton, Steve Puchalski and Gary Peters (These Electric Lives, Products of better Living). Complete with family reflections and irresistible countrified trinkets, Suburban Cowboy was received with high regard and continues to be played on College and local radio stations. The album was charted in the top 5 of the !Earshot College Charts in March 2007.

Equipped with a mint green hollow body guitar, Shelby played in fellow label mate Megan Hamilton's band, The Volunteer Canola. She appeared on Megan's debut release Feudal Ladies Club and sang background vocals on Steve Puchalski's critically acclaimed album, Deromantic.

As well as having a resilient pair of pipes, Shelby knows a thing or two about arranging and song writing. Her upcoming (yet to be titled) new album will be released in early June 2008. Orchestrated by a collection of intricate instruments it promises to deliver wrapped in an infusion of psychedelic, folk-tinged goodness.

Shelby continues play all over Toronto and surrounding area. Notable shows include sharing the stage with Rock Plaza Central, The Sunparlour Players Nathan Wiley, and Mary-Margaret O hara. Shelby and her band showcased at The Cadillac Lounge last June at Toronto's NXNE festival.

Shelby's second album entitled "Tudro" will be released this summer, July 2009.

Can of Salty Ham

Written By: Shelby Lamb

Cookie cutters, the jolly homemaker
Whatever happened to the movers and the shakers?
Theyre connected by a wire on a concrete shore
The highway is a river, listen to the fish roar

They all travel in circles cause theyre mixing it together
Eventually they bubble to the top of a tower
Thats so high in the sky to a cloud made out of sugar
It sprinkles on the city and makes everything taste better

A can of salty ham and a package of potatoes
Its lunchtime at the office and a signal from the radio says,
Rain, rain, rain, gonna wash away the painful
Inevitable downfall resulting from this life

Well, someone's born, someone dies
Someones happy, someone cries
Its good to know were somewhat human still
Its good to know were somewhat human still
Its good to know, its good to know
Were good to go and thats Gods will

Toxic love oh what a waste
Chemical dust in your face
Why lets all get down together and boogie to the human race
Dominating nature thats the name of the game
Avert your eyes from failure so that terror is the one to blame

Chorus

Roam

Written By: Shelby Lamb

Oh, you gotta give it time to grow
Said the tree from a century ago
You gotta give it time to grow
Oh, you gotta give it time to grow

I knew that you were some sort of warrior,
But I never knew what you were searching for.
You said the world could be obtained within one moment,
But I said, all I really want to do is roam it - I just want to roam it.
You said, go-ahead wet the earth let your grief spill,
Soon the sun will come and offer relief still,
A rose may be tall and very handsome,
When the wind blows she often will spare us the little one - the little one.

Oh, you gotta give it time to grow
Said the tree from a century ago
You gotta give it time to grow
Oh, you gotta give it time to grow

I said, but I want to be a rose,
I’m a weed I get bent and I get pulled.
I dig the earth but I feel like I’m wasting my time,
Here I am still waiting for the damn sun to shine.
You said there’s no end, it’s all one beginning,
You’re not losing so don’t worry if you’re not winning.
Lines of courage, they show by the dirt on your hand,
You gotta know the land is low before you reach the highest mountain -
The highest mountain

Oh, you gotta give it time to grow
Said the tree from a century ago
You gotta give it time to grow
Oh, you gotta give it time to grow

I said, although I’m down I have been high
I wear a crown made of mud and my courage does shine
But this road seems so long and very narrow
I am numbed by the hopeful and by the unattainable – by the unattainable
You said, so you can’t hear the song of the stars
Don’t you realize how far away they are
If you hear the song of the time you spend
Then the world could be obtained within one moment
After moment, after moment, after moment

Just So

Written By: Shelby Lamb

My old man’s been drinking saying things that he don’t mean, I know he don’t,
So I won’t believe him.
My old man’s been drinking, cursing, saying there’s no time that’s worse than
This one,that he’s in.
But this road it lie just so. It is level inexhaustible,
Unnerved and strong, we’ll walk along toward our way home
The wind has caught a petal, she will spin and never settle
Till we find out way into the new sunrays
Of tomorrow,
We’ll go. Just so
My old man’s been drinking saying what’s the point of living anymore,
So what’s he’s living for
My old man’s been drinking saying things that he don’t mean, I know he don’t,
So I won’t believe him.
But this road it lie just so. It is level inexhaustible,
Unnerved and strong, we’ll walk along toward our way home
The wind has caught a petal, she will spin and never settle
Till we find out way into the new sunrays
Of tomorrow,
We’ll go. Just so

The Sparrow

Written By: Shelby Lamb

Nothing but the best means nothing much to perfection, yet, nothing less will do
I saw her reflection in the window; she was flying high like a sparrow then,
Suddenly she crashed; she went down,
Her death was so profound that it might’ve been my fault

So I took her in my hands and I told her about this art of living,
If you wan to behave like the wind, you’ve got to blow it all away,
See, I’m so brave, I can finish what I started
I’m so brave; I know how to to hide a broken heart,
Heart, heart, heart

I learned a lesson in survival from the death of a sparrow and,
How the power of mistakes can instigate the power,
Of what’s to follow, she’s so brave; the tiny little sparrow,
She’s so brave; the tiny little bundle,
She blew me away

The Bleeding Hearts

Written By: Shelby Lamb

The bleeding hearts are dripping outside your door,
We’re under the porch; we weren’t expecting this sort of down pour
My head is clear and clean as if the rain has washed right through my brain
The gates are wide open, conversation invoking that nothing’s gonna change ‘cause
My hardened heart’s still fastened deep within my chest still beating,
And you still got your freedom; it’s only rain
I’m heading home I’m not going to work today
‘Cause I’m under a plastic bag with two peepholes like in a capsule, I’m looking out at everything
I see the rain; I see the stoplight has changed
I see the clock on the tower’s devouring the day
I see the cracks in the pavement; they’re leading the way back home
It’s just a face, it’s just name; it evapourates just like the rain,
On the grass; and how the clouds can move away so fast
Yesterday no longer exists; it’s just a scheme to make me miss your kiss
And want to see you again but,
You don’t got time for girlfriends and one night stands they come too easily
Besides you’re far too busy being free; it’s only rain

Maybe one day, I’ll see you on the street or we’ll meet in the bar; we’ll talk about the weather and,
How nothing has changed ‘cept for the leaves on the trees and it’s getting darker
And as my blanket gets heavy, I’m feeling kind of lonely
But that doesn’t mean I wanna be with anybody ‘cause,
Don’t you know that when you’re alone nobody can make you unhappy?
And I, I got no time for boyfriends and one stand they leave me ill at ease
Besides, I’m far too busy being free
And you, you don’t got time for girlfriends and one night stands they come too easily Besides, you’re far too busy being free, free, free; it’s only rain
