Shelly Renee isn’t just another pretty face who is merely intrigued by the flashing lights. The 17-year-old pop-infused R&B singer/songwriter can hardly remember when music wasn’t an inescapable part of her well-being.
Born in Riverside, California and raised between Virginia and California, the natural born entertainer made her singing debut at age 4 in the church choir. At 9 years old, she began playing the piano and developed an intense vinyl record collection, which is usual for someone born during President Clinton’s term in office. Shelly Renee joined her first girl group when she was 11 years old, which helped her grow as an artist. Before her indisputable creativity disjointed the solo artist from girl groups, she allowed the experiences, like showcasing to record labels, to further enhance her artist development.
During high school, while most girls were wavering homecoming queen ballots, Shelly Renee was opening concerts and performing at parties held by artists such as Grammy award nominated, Teena Marie. She even sang for Stevie Wonder, which landed her a $30,000 scholarship to The Hollywood Pop Academy in Los Angeles, California. At the academy she was trained by some of the music industry’s elite vocal coaches and choreographers such as Vesta Williams, Alex Cantrell (wrote Jo-Jo’s “Get Out, Leave”), Greg Himmelstein (discovered Christina Aguilera), Shane Sparks (So You Think You Can Dance/America’s Best Dance Crew), and Darrien Hennings (Millennium Dance Studios).
Before graduation Shelly Renee not only received radio air play in the states, she’s experienced international adulation as her songs acquired constant rotation in Jamaica, the UK, Germany, Switzerland, and the Philippines. The indefatigable songstress is creating her own internet buzz with nearly 200,000 total Youtube views, over 2,600 Twitter followers and 35,500 Myspace friends.
“In music today, I think there are a lot of talented people but love and creativity are missing from the lyrics. And live instruments. Artists aren’t themselves because they lack control,” says the young yet mature Isley brothers fan. “I grew up loving Aaliyah, Stevie Wonder, Michael & Janet, plus Prince, Britney Spears, Beyonce, and Christina Aguilera. I want to show my generation that same love for music.”
Shelly Renee’s mission is to empower teenage girls through her music and especially her lyrics. She strives to be a positive role model and a well-rounded entertainer, as she sets out to conquer music, acting, and Broadway.
