Sherise Valley

Sherise Valley

BandAlternativeSinger/Songwriter

Big guitars & lots of hooks. Vocals like Lisa Loeb; songwriting like Lucinda Williams meets the Ramones.

Biography

Featuring the production wizardry of Juno-winner Mark Makoway (formerly of Canadian rockers Moist), The catchy hook-driven songs from Sherise Valley’s debut CD “Blackout” crackle to life with energy and thoughtful edgy lyrics.

Full of accessible alternative pop-rock tunes, you’ll find yourself humming along to Sherise’s honey-sweet vocals and big guitar hooks by the time the second choruses come along.

Radio-ready “Over the Border” currently loops on the Songwriter Universe playlist after winning the online magazine’s international "Best Song of the Month" contest in Dec, 2004. And "Highway of Love" just placed in Songwriter Universe's Top 5 songs for March 2006. Meanwhile, Tracks from the CD have already garnered airplay on college radio stations across Western Canada and the U.S.

As a songwriter, Sherise was selected twice for British Columbia Festival of the Arts conferences. And her songs won two Canadian Factor grants.

But Sherise isn’t just another chick with a guitar pick. After three university degrees, Sherise Valley (aka Cherise Valerie Burda) rocks out at her day gig as a policy expert and director with Canada’s leading environmental non-profit, the David Suzuki Foundation.

In fact, PrintAction Magazine just listed her (Burda) as one of 50 most influential Canadians in graphic communications for her work on science-based alternatives to the destruction of Canada's rainforests. It’s all fodder for the life experiences and insight that shine through in her tunes.

But don’t expect songs about trees.

With influences as diverse as the Ramones, Lucinda Williams, Liz Phair, Yo La Tengo, and Radiohead, the tunes on “Blackout” range from bourbon-inspired summer road songs (“Over the Border”) to political commentary (“Looks Like War”) to the sassy, sarcastic “Sugar Mama”.

Sherise just moved to Toronto and is quickly assembling a new band. “Blackout” is being re-released in Toronto this summer.

Century Girl

Written By: Sherise Valley

I hate money its so dirty
I love the water washes over my head at five am

I’m done with dancing
your moves no longer please me
My feet are sticky
and I want you to release me
I want you to release me

Grey light, somewhere
between day and night
lipstick, antiseptic
century girl, don’t you get it
Century Girl
Century Girl

I hate everything, Sunday morning
My mind is twitching
Your lies are getting really boring
I don’t cross my legs
I don’t shut my eyes
Watch my mouth open wide to say goodbye, to say goodbye

Grey light, somewhere between day and night
out on the street with the junkies, century girl don’t you want me

Century Girl
Century Girl

I am over qualified
I am never satisfied
I am exploding with success
I am drowning in your excess

Century Girl
Century Girl

Over the Border

Written By: Sherise Valley

I rode a bus to the warmest town
I could reach in 24 hours
I got there as the sun
was going down
I wandered in the vampire den
Ladies night it was full of men
He asked where i was from
I don’t look like I belong

chorus:
Where you gonna take me today
I came all this way for last call
Over the border
I don’t have to explain
what I do my age or my name
Or why I am here at all
Over the border

He bought me a drink I shot it back
And before I could think
I was riding fast
In the passenger seat
of his Cadillac
My heart was beating with fear
The vampire den disappeared
In the rear view mirror
And he said baby, don’t look back

chorus

The night tumbled like the sea
I knew he was in love with me
I kissed him softly
He said I think it’s time
for you to leave
He pulled over
in the middle of nowhere
Pushed me out of the car
Said I’ll make you walk
all the way home
Before I let you break my heart

chorus

Movie Star

Written By: SheriseValley

Never gonna let you go
Put me on a pedestal
Driving around in your car
Looking like a movie star
All the girls would kill to be me
All the boys line up to see me
Walking the streets with my guitar Looking like a movie star

I’m so famous when I’m with you
I go crazy without you

Never gonna let you go
It’s all about who you know
I walk in a local bar
Looking like a movie star
If I decide to go away
Run down to L.A.
Live with me in my new hood
Melrose, Hollywood

I’m so famous when I'm with you
I go crazy without you
I’m no ordinary lover
I’m just trying to be discovered

highway of love

Written By: Sherise Valley

HIGHWAY OF LOVE

one hand’s on the wheel
his other hand’s on my knee
my hair rushes back
ahead is an endless dream
he says to me
when it’s good it feels like freedom
the road is open, the sky is clear
the best is yet to come

on the highway of love
on the highway of love
Its just me and you

bring back kerouac
the heat & the beat of the wheels
from gravel to tarmac
the smoother and better it feels
he says to me
when it’s good it feels like freedom
the road is open, the sky is clear
the best is yet to come

on the highway of love
on the highway of love

no road blocks, no truck stops,
no traffic jams
no red lights or double lines,
no one night stands
just me and my man

feeling great on the interstate
the music’s loud
baby you’re my roadmap now

on the highway of love
on the highway of love

Sugar Mama

Written By: Sherise Valley

SUGAR MAMA

If I had money I’d be your sugar mama
Give you everything you wanted, buy you the world
You deserve honey to be showered in Champaign
Coated in cocaine by your candy girl

If I had a car I’d drive a black Mercedes,
Be your uptown lady, you be my downtown boy
It’s not that far away from the real thing
But I gotta ride a subway to get to your door

chorus:
uh huh uh huh sugar mama
sh- sugar mama uh huh oh ya
uh huh uh huh sugar mama
sh- sugar mama uh huh oh ya
uh huh….

If I had money Id buy back your heart then
I’d pay for your apartment and keep the key
I want you to be my private possession
your secret confessions are safe with me

I’m not holding you against your will
Sugar mama paying the bills
Sometimes sweet-- sugar baby
Sometimes cheap-- dirty old lady

-chorus-

I wish we could go back to the way things were
When how much money you made,
Yeah diamonds and fur
Didn’t mean as much as who we really are
The state of the world or the size of my heart

Youth is wasted on the young yeah
Money’s wasted on the rich man
Booze is wasted on the drunk and
Your kisses are wasted on that bitch

-chorus-

Inside

Written By: Sherise Valley

over is the night before
dark is the open door
that you walked out of
while listened
to you leave for something more
no words to say
or reasons for you to stay
i held still and waited for your footsteps to take you away
its hard to love
when your heart is shut
you tell me that I’m beautiful
I don’t think you really know

You haven't looked long enough
to see me on the inside
you never made love hard enough to feel me on the inside
and now you walk out of my life
and leave me on the inside

rolling over the ground like a freight train no turning back
you were staring out the window
i was lying on the track
I'm wondering is it all or nothing
you tell me that there's nothing wrong
I've been waiting far too long

You haven't looked long enough
to see me on the inside
you never made love hard enough to feel me on the inside
and now you walk out of my life
and leave me on the inside

its hot and it burns
where the heart never learns
where I want you to be
come back when you're ready
to love me

You never tried hard enough
to know me on the inside
you never gave your heart enough to love me on the inside
you never reached out far enough to touch me on the inside
and now you walk out of my life
and leave me on the inside
