"Sherita Perez Htown Love EP Release"

SHERITA PEREZ
Legend has it starlet Lana Turner was discovered at the soda counter of a Sunset Boulevard cafe, which could never have happened to Houston singer-songwriter Sherita Perez. It's not that Perez isn't talented. Find out for yourself how she can go from a coquettish whisper to blues-mama belting without missing a note by stopping at Axelrad for the release party for her new EP, Htown Love, release this Sunday. And, like Lana, she's a looker, with a confidence and style that turns heads before she ever starts singing. The reason Perez could never have been discovered at the soda shop is because she probably would have owned the soda shop. That's the kind of crazy drive and energy she's got. She wouldn't need to wait for some producer to happen upon her and create a star. She's smart and driven enough to know how to shine on her own. There's probably not a music writer in town who didn't get an advanced copy of Htown Love from her with a personalized note. The two-track EP features "Under the Sheets" and the title track, her ode to the sites and people that make Houston special, particularly its music-makers.

The Sunday show will be a highlight in an ongoing weekly residency at Axelrad and will feature Dem, a band she handpicked for the event. And that big event will be the second of back-to-back performances for her over the weekend. She's one of the featured acts on Saturday's Women That Rock 2 at Rudyard's. If this was all she was working on, it would be plenty, but Perez is determined to grow her name outside of Houston, too; so, later this month she and her partner, Sik Mule drummer Nick Melcher, will hit the road for shows in Arizona, Colorado, Nevada and Cailfornia. Naturally, they're both hustling to GoFund themselves all the way there and back. If you can't make one of this weekend's shows to do it in person, visit the crowdsourcing page to show one of Houston's rising talents a little Htown love. JESSE SENDEJAS JR. - Houston Press

"Best of The Week"

Nightingale Room will be bringing in the folky pop of Houston’s Sherita Perez. Sherita might work harder than most people you’ll meet in music, she’s fronted multiple bands, and her latest works are better than anything else she’s done in the past. The dark and folk heavy sounds of John Egan will be on as direct support and opener. This guy plays with a dobro and adds this really soulful and thick voice that makes his sound one you need to hear as soon as possible. His 2014 release Amulet is like hearing the gospel of what blue eyed soul bands wish they sounded like. The 21 & up show has doors at 7 pm and it’s 100% FREE. - Free Press Houston

"The Music Issue"

In April, Houston-reared indie-folk singer-songwriter Sherita Perez and her drummer boyfriend Nick Melcher departed on a three-week tour of California, in support of her new single “Blue Skies.” Being a full-time musician — especially one who tours — is not an easy life, but it’s one the free spirit is content to be living. “I just want to have beautiful experiences in beautiful places with beautiful people,” she says. Perez, who gigs constantly — “You have to be able to jump when people say jump” — believes that a positive outlook is key to her success. “This is just the beginning.” - Houston City Book

"Meet the 2016 HPMA Reader's Choice Nominees"

The Reader’s Choice HPMA category is more than just a way to recognize a handful of deserving artists who didn’t quite make it onto our original ballot. It’s a great way to witness the kind of fan support behind Houston’s local musicians, which can be a sight to behold. To be honest, when we opened the category on Friday, we didn’t expect nearly the kind of response we got. We finally cut off the voting Monday afternoon, nearly 1,000 votes later, and the most impressive part is not just the way voters stuck to the guidelines we had laid out (for the most part), but how enthusiastic they were about speaking up for their choices. Pretty soon, as certain names started to pull ahead, we started to get excited as we realized just how much these voters wanted their favorites to win. So it is with great pride that we present this year’s HPMA Reader’s Choice nominees. All of them are worthy of your vote, though of course only one will win. The poll is open now — including the nominees below — and voting continues through November 18. - Houston Press

Bio

From the chemical plants of Texas City to CBGB's in NYC to the biggest stages of Houston. Sherita's journey has been a long, winding, and extremely challenging but rewarding road.

Since moving back home in 2012, Sherita quickly developed a reputation in the Houston, TX music scene as one of the hardest working musicians the city has to offer.

Hailed as "the most diverse singer and Indie musician from the Texas Gulf Coast yet." Sherita has one of Texas's newest, most powerful and unique voices.

Sherita cites a wide variety of musical influences such as Joni Mitchell, Amy Winehouse, Stevie Nicks, Etta James, Edie Brickell, Billie Holiday and Janis Joplin. Listening to these greats has helped Sherita develop a talent for crossing genres easily. When asked what’s on her playlist right now she’ll tell you, “…anything before 1978 because I like the sound of older recordings. The lyrics were more emotional and well structured.” Sherita is a songwriter who enjoys writing about positive change through action, manifestation, and choosing to be someone under any circumstances. She also puts this practice into daily life.

Able to jump from solo act to full band performance with the snap of her fingers, Sherita brings a genuine attitude and a stage presence that fills any room. In fact, she’s performed at the legendary CBGB’s, House of Blues, and has a monthly residency at Axelrad, Houston’s most popular beer garden. She has delighted audiences at festivals and clubs across North America.

Sherita recently went to the studio with notable Houston musicians, Kelly Doyle, Geoffrey Muller, Tank Lisenbe, and Will Van Horn, of Robert Ellis fame. They performed on the title track of her brand new EP, “Htown Love”. It was recorded at Houston’s oldest and most recognizable studio, SugarHill Recording Studios. The other track on this EP recorded at the same studio, “Under The Sheets”, features well known Houston musicians Nick Gaitan, Nathan Quick, The Mighty Orq, and Shawn Hayle.

She has been featured in multiple publications including the Houston PressScene Magazine, and Free Press Houston. She has also recorded with famed producers Chris “Frenchie” Smith and Josh Applebee. She has also been featured on major market radio. Also, most recently in this Houston City Book article.

You can hear her new record here at Soundcloud and watch her videos on her YouTube channel now.

Sherita Perez is truly independent as it is only her and her partner/drummer/co-manager, Nick Melcher, who book every single show.

Sherita and her band recently performed at Party On The Plaza, a downtown Houston free summer music showcase, where she was featured on KPRC TV Channel 2, Houston Life.
