Bio

Sheryl Cohen is an award winning, Brooklyn based songwriter whose work reflects contemporary American culture mixed with the richness of Brazilian and World music.

Lyrically, Sheryl explores life’s great themes including: God, Our Place in The World, Sex, Separation and Passion.

In September, ASCAP awarded Sheryl with a 2010 ASCAPLUS award for songwriting. This marks the seventh year in row is which Sheryl has received this honor.

Sheryl is currently recording in Brooklyn with producer and multi-instrumentalist extraordinaire Mark Marshall. There first collaborative effort "I Live In The Cracks" was released in July.

Electric Eyes, an EP of original lounge music, released in 2009 (Izzy Gold Records) was the result of the collaboration between Sheryl and legendary Producer Izzy Gold, (Ashlee Simpson, George Clinton, The Ravonettes, etc.). Upon release of Electric Eyes, Suzanne Hilleary, founder/president of WacBiz Music licensed all of the songs for use in Film/TV.

Producer/Guitarist Marcos Vigio (Beat and Bow Records) produced, In Between I Daydream, a 5 song EP of original pop songs. Several tracks from In Between I Daydream have been placed on TV including the track "I Know A Place" which was featured on Access Hollywood.

Not An Ordinary Girl, was conceived during a trip to Brazil’s Northeast – Salvador da Bahia. The city of Salvador is the epicenter for many of Brazil’s most progressive and exciting percussion players. The music of "Not An Ordinary Girl", blends the percussive ideas and rhythmic elements, heard throughout Salvador, with Pop elements and English Lyrics.

Sheryl co-leads a colorful Brazilian/Jazz quartet called Brazz Jazz. Brazz Jazz has twice toured Brazil, in support of their CD Kick Off Your Shoes, to remarkable success. Their CD has been the focus of several radio shows in Brazil, newspaper articles and a consistent seller in music stores. “A fundamental aspect of brazz jazz, which sets them apart from their peers, is the choice of material” states Ayrton Martini. Martini a Brazilian music critic and producer adds, “brazz jazz escapes from the Bossa Nova as the obvious translation of Brazilian Jazz”. The repertoire choices are not the usual Jazz standards and the songs are chosen with good taste and originality”.

Locally, Sheryl has performed with her band at many of New York's Hot Spots including: Rockwood Music Hall, The Zinc Bar, Piano's and The Slipper Room. She has appeared several times, at Carnegie Hall, as backing vocalist for Angelique Kidjo.

On Tuesday Nights, you can catch Sheryl performing, as part of the Brooklyn music collective, The Local Correspondents. The collective plays every tuesday at Bar 4 in Brooklyn.

Sheryl graduated, with honors, from the Berklee College of Music in Boston.

She is an award-winning composer having received ASCAP’S 2010, 2009, 2008, 2007, 2006, 2005 and 2004 ASCAPLUS AWARD.

Sheryl is the President and Founder of Copy Cat Music and Music and Transcription Company.
