"Gig Review By Anna Vandas"

She Says Electric gives a performance full of pep, spice, and sincerity. One of the aspects I love about them is how they recreate older worship tunes to become fresh expressions of love to the Father, and one suddenly hears their meaning for the first time again. And don't expect to sit back and listen... you'll be dancing to this lively rock-party in no time. She Says Electric is heartfelt worship combined with finely-tuned musicians and a ruckus rock n' roll flavour!

Worship Loud. It’s a phrase that seems to be the opposite to what is supposed to be the norm. Worship is often a time for quietness before God and personal introspection. But, what about those difficult times in life when adversity makes solemn worship hard to enter in to? For Vancouver, BC band She Says Electric, that’s when you Worship Loud, which is also the name of their newly released studio-recorded worship album.

A project six years in the making, Worship Loud is the most heartfelt expression of the group’s love for their God and Saviour. The band didn’t set out to make a worship album. It started out as way to document of an era of brokenness, but quickly became an expression of life and joy in their faith. Many of the songs come out of the personal journeys of the band members as well as their experience as worship leaders at Friends: Langley Vineyard, a church in a suburb of Vancouver. The album also contains several covers, some from such notable songwriters as Brian Doerksen, the Rock ‘n’ Roll Worship Circus and Sarah McLachlan.

She Says Electric is a four-piece worship group consisting of lead vocalist and guitarist Connie Budzak, her husband and drummer Ken Budzak, lead guitarist Derek Usher and bassist and keyboardist Damian Burns. Connie, Ken and Derek played music together for years before starting She Says Electric. More than just a musical partnership, it’s a friendship that started in Kamloops, BC and has continued through a move to the Vancouver area.

"Record Reviews (Shawn McLaughlin)"

She Says Electric Sophomore album “Worship Loud” sets a very high standard with its first cut “Kingdom Song” – a rock-a-billy romp that benefits from fine, feedback-laden guitar work and Connie Budzak’s “treated“vocal. This is the type of original modern worship that not enough artists seem to wholly grasp. They immediately follow with a credible version of Rock and Roll Worship Circus’ “The Undiscovered” –a cut that lacks the ominous mystery (and pink Floyd-isims) of the original but quickly overcomes a lackluster intro with searing guitar work from Derek Usher. Elsewhere one cant help but be a little let down after a solid beginning as the next few cuts are decent but more conventional takes on rock styled worship (although Ushers occasional solos are always interesting)that holds little interest.

The real story however is the lyrical realism evident in SSE’S songs (and cover choices), as the band does not shy away from un-flinching self examination as part of their worship experience, yet always manages to direct their thanks and gratitude to God for being their salvation. These songs may be less appropriate for some congregations worship but SSE doesn’t really write for that audience as they are quite likely to be found playing in nightclubs around Vancouver on any given night, mixing in worship tunes with other songs written from the perspective of a believer.
Along with interesting taste in covers (Raspberry Jam and, Sarah MacLachlan) the members of she says electric need to be commended for their commitment to bringing authentic emotions to the Worship genre. The may never reach a huge audience but they will, likely, always have something worthwhile to say and a very interesting way to say it

"Good times had at 3-day music fest"

Everyone had a blast! We can hardly wait for next year!”

That was the report from Erin Dawson, one of the organizers of the Becoming Shiloh Music Festival held the weekend before last at Serenity Performing Arts Center near Vavenby.

“The bands covered such a wide range of music styles,” said Dawson. “It was fantastic, and there was something everyone would enjoy. From bluegrass (This Old Mountain) and country (Art Pruce), to amazing tap-style acoustic guitar (Derek Usher), indie (Anna Vandas), rock (She Says Electric), and everything in between. Russ Rosen led people in folk dances- even some square dancing at one point!”

Final counts were not available but Dawson estimated about 220 people attended the event. Most were from outside the area and, in fact, two came all the way from Texas and Virginia for the festival.

Despite the generally sunny weather, attendance by local residents seemed to be down somewhat from last year.

“They missed out, because it was really, really fun Dawson said.

The organizer said all the performers were good but a couple of the acts stuck in her mind as being outstanding during the weekend.

Kamloops’ Art Pruce showed a real love for his family in his music and “… he’s just a really great guy,” said Dawson.

She Says Electric from Vancouver got everyone up dancing.

“They were just so much fun,” she said.

Besides the music, compliments were heard about the food served by the concession. One lady put a comment on Facebook that said she had discovered camping could be fun, she said.

What will she remember most about the weekend?

“The feeling of family,” said Dawson.

Bio

She Says Electric is a four-piece (rock style) worship group that gives a performance full of pep, spice, and sincerity. In addition to writing heartfelt and passionate original worship music, they have an unmatched gift in recreating older worship tunes to bring to life fresh expressions of love to the Father. One suddenly hears a classic song's meaning again for the first time. Don't expect to sit back and listen... you'll be dancing to this lively rock-party in no time. She Says Electric is heartfelt worship combined with finely-tuned musicians and a rowdy rock n' roll flavor!

SSE consists of lead vocalist and guitarist Connie Budzak, her husband and drummer Ken Budzak, lead guitarist Derek Usher, and bassist and keyboardist Damian Burns. Connie brings smooth, soaring vocals to accompany her soulful lyrics, while Ken lays down his tight grooves, providing the rhythmic foundation. Derek, a wild man on stage, adds his searing guitar work and textures that are at times understated, and at others, brash and energetic. Damian Burns is a recent addition to the group, providing the moody keys and rock solid bass that brings the band’s sound together.

Connie, Ken and Derek played music together for years with Heather Clark Band before starting She Says Electric. More than just a musical partnership, SSE is a friendship that has lasted well over a decade.
