Bio

A native of New York’s Lower East Side and a current resident and local legend of Los Angeles, Shihan has been on top of the poetry and underground hip-hop scene for years. In 1993, Shihan was signed to MCA Records as an artist/writer. At MCA, he record an album with hip-hop group The Lost Tribe of Boodah, wrote for the NBA Jam Session series and created the theme for Reebok's ' Blacktop' campaign. Shihan also wrote for the popular Schoolhouse Rocks compilation series. In 2000 he co-wrote one of MTV's most popular Rock The Vote campaigns - ‘Tic Toc.’ Shihan lent his spoken word talents to soft drink giant Pepsi for their ‘Slam’ national television and radio campaigns, which he co-wrote.

Recently, Shihan toured the country as the 'Street Poet' for the Nike Battlegrounds One-on-One Tournament. As a performer, he has established himself as an accomplished artist. Besides being a member of the 2004 National Poetry Slam Championship Team, he earned Grand Champion titles at the 2001 Los Angeles Finals and the 2000 Hollywood Finals. Shihan was also a core poet on the Grand Marnier sponsored SlamAmerica Bus Tour which toured 30 cities in 30 days. He's been featured at the 2000 Tony Awards after show in NYC and the #1 rated show on Oprah's Oxygen Media 'As She Sees It.' Shihan’s been featured on all five seasons of HBO’s acclaimed Def Poetry, where he also serves as Talent Coordinator for the show. He is currently touring cast member in the Def Poetry Jam 3.0 International Tour. Recently, Shihan’s been a part of HBO Comedy Arts Festival in Aspen, CO, The Essense Music Festival in New Orleans, (where he opened for Alicia Keys) and the Soul Beach Music Festival (where he opened for Musiq Soulchild). His ability to transcend cultural and generational boundaries makes Shihan a rare and highly sought after talent. For the past seven years, Shihan has been co-hosting Da' Poetry Lounge, the nation's largest open mic night held in Hollywood, CA. This very busy man is also the official producer of Word Fest at the next Pan African Film Festival (the world's largest and most prestigious black film festival), and is currently working with rap legend KRS-One on soon-to-be-released tracks.

Shihan’s Debut CD, “The Poet” is set for an August 23rd release on Groove Gravy Records/Studio Distribution. On “The Poet,” Shihan combines his hip-hop skills with his poetry and winds up with a masterpiece of a record. The album consists of material recorded over the past 3 years. 15 tracks moving from traditional hip-hop to a cappella poetry, with 4 brand new gems produced by Jazzelicious including a collaboration with legendary electronica chameleon Ursula Rucker. It's hip-hop the way only a few can deliver - intelligent, free flowing, funky as can be, and with plenty of substance and style. Live versions of the a cappella skits on “The Poet,” taken from Def Poetry Jam, are available on DVD upon request.
