"Shimmer and Gloom at Radiothon"

Shimmer and Gloom at Radiothon
The biggest party of the year is this weekend and is part of a bigger spectacular event!
Radiothon starts on Friday and the party to end all parties is the following night; invading Northbridge and filling five different venues.
Ahead of their performance at Ya Ya’s this Saturday as part of this, Matt Harskamp from local band Shimmergloom came in to RTR to have a chat with Peter Barr.

"Tha AU Review's 5 Artists Of The Month December 2012"

Tony Lendrum, Perth State Editor: If you live outside of Western Australia you may have had a slight excuse for having not caught on to the magnificence that is Shimmergloom, but that excuse exists no longer: Shimmergloom has infectious raw energy. It reminds me of nights in the student guild listening to live bands who played for the solely for the love of making music (and maybe wishing for one groupie at the end of the gig). Unfamiliar Nights will have you playing an air guitar on “Control”, waving your your cigarette lighter or iPhone in the air on “Foolish Ways.” For the rest of the album you will just be thinking of ways to get your boss to allow you to crank this EP up at work.

"Album Review:Shimmergloom-Unfamiliar Nights (2011 EP)"

If you live outside of Perth you may have had a slight excuse for having not caught on to the magnificence that is Shimmergloom, but that excuse exists no longer. Read no further (well do read further) and rush out now and buy a copy of their debut EP Unfamiliar Nights, before your ears leave you for someone with more taste.

This 5 track EP is loaded with so much aural goodness that you will be wondering why you didn't discover this little treat sooner and why the rest of Australia isn’t following in your footsteps (yes this is the section where we curse shows like The Voice and Australian Idol)

Shimmergloom have this raw energy that is hard not to be infected by. It reminds me of nights in the student guild listening to live bands who played for the solely for the love of making music (and maybe for the wish of at least one groupie at the end of the gig) Unfamiliar Nights is an EP with something for everyone, it will have you playing an air guitar with the best of them on “Control”, waving your your cigarette lighter (or iphone) in the air on “Foolish Ways” and for the rest of the album you will just be thinking of ways to get your boss to allow you to crank this EP up loud at work.

If you want some great Australian rock music then look no further and I will eat my favorite hat if you don't tap at least one toe by the end of the EP.

Review Score: 8.5 out of 10

"Unfamiliar Nights EP Review"

Drum Magazine Review-06/10/11
SHIMMERGLOOM
Unfamiliar Nights
Independent

These local lads have crafted a surprisingly dense and organised sound for a three-piece. Easily sitting on the contemporary indie-rock stage, Shimmergloom incorporate a lot of old-school shoegazey pop-punk into their repertoire, the Swervedriver/Jebediah influence easily picked out of their well structured riffs & heavy basslines. Standout tracks Foolish Ways and Unfamiliar Nights build up powerful, melodic sounds without reaching the familiar banality that other indie rock bands can so easily fall into. The vocals are also perfectly suited to the level of aggression the band creates. These guys should have a far from gloomy future ahead of them.

"Gignition, Swan Basement, North Fremantle, 30/01/11"

Final act of the evening Shimmergloom definately had the most experience under thier belt. The three piece held together driving progressive-meet-indie melodic rock with strong vocals and again the dual vocalist thing goin on. The band wove impressive melodies behind tight and clever instrumentation that really bounced well off each other. Hopefully we'll see a lot more of the band; it was a great way to end the night - Drum Magazine

"Photo Gallery and Live Review: Boys Boys Boys! + Minute36 + Shimmergloom + Umpire -The Rosemount, Perth (22.10.10)"

Shimmergloom

were next up with some sensational Hendrix like distortion and feedback. The twin vocals of Shimmergloom worked really well and the band mixed it up, playing some magnificent funk injected melodic rock, showing great versatility and talent. Definitely worth a listen.
