Bio

Israeli- born pianist and composer Shimrit Shoshan began playing the organ and flute when she was 8 years old and went on to attended Israel's prestigious Thelma Yellin High School for the Arts. At 18, Shoshan was drafted into the Israeli army, where she served as an "Excellent Musician," a title only given to a select few. While in the army Shoshan worked and studied alongside the leading names in Israeli Jazz such as Amit Golan, Shai Zalman, Ofer Ganor Amos Hoffman, Avishai Cohen and Rea Barness. In 2002 Shoshan moved to New York City to pursue her career in music. In 2004, she applied to and was accepted, to the jazz program at the City College of New York City and received many scholarships for her performance, as well as her compositions. In 2006 she was accepted and received scholarships to the New School for Jazz and Contemporary, where she has studied both privately and in the classroom with some of the most well known jazz musicians in the country such as, Eric Reed, Frank Hewitt, Harry Whitaker, Kenny Barron, Charles Tolliver and Benny Powell. In 2009, Shoshan was selected as one of four finalists to compete for acceptance to the prestigious Monk Institute. Shoshan has also performed at many of New York’s famous jazz clubs such as Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola at Jazz at Lincoln Center, The Fat Cat, Smalls, Sweet Rhythm, Cachacha and Kitano. Although only having been in New York City for six years, Shoshan has had the privilege of performing with jazz artists Nasheet Waits, John Hebert, Eric McPherson, Abraham Burton and Ben Street, in addition to performing most recently with legendary jazz drummer, Charlie Persip. Shoshan is featured on renowned jazz drummer, Eric McPherson’s newest release “Continuum� (smalls records), and has composed and recorded music for poet Carla M. Cherry’s spoken word release, “Gnat Feathers & Butterfly Wings.� Shoshan aspires to continue to compose for film, dance, theater and her own projects. She is currently working on her own recording project, “Chamsa�. As of recent Shoshan will be traveling to Washington, DC to participate in the finals of the Mary Lou Williams Competition
