"SONICBIDS ARTIST REVIEW SERIES #17 SHINDIGNATION(tm)"

SONICBIDS ARTIST REVIEW SERIES- #17 SHINDIGNATION(tm)
Article by John Tenting
GENRE: POP
SECONDARY GENRE: ADULT CONTEMPORARY
HYANNIS, MASSACHUSETTSUSA
Shindignation(tm) is the result of an ongoing collaborative musical commitment by Scott and Rit Karath. Scott is a multi-instrumentalist playing guitar, violin, drums, keyboards, electronic drums and programming. Rit, records, performs, and takes part in the arrangement of production of the material. She also contributes vocally, and plays piano, guitar and bass. Her most personal contribution is in the production, engineering and editing end of the musical process."The Dissing of Summer Lawns" was Shindignation(tm) debut which was self-released in June 2000. On each release Scott and Ritt utilize a selection of different artists around the Cape Cod area. June 2003 brought the couples next effort, "Losing My Shindignity". With many of the same artists from their last release and a few more added including, Malcolm Granger's keyboards which help individualize each song.Their latest release "Let's Not Go Ice Fishing" June 2007 is another collaborative effort which shows their progression from the start. "Driver Of This Delusion" is a soulful creation sung from the heart by Steve Vaughn. The arrangement is mood inducing with some nice production effects added in like the tremolo'd guitar and individual instrumental accessories added. "Starless" was a nominee in the Toronto Exclusive Mag 2007 for Best International Pop Song. It's a slow ride delivered effectively, with an almost gospel quality to the chorus. This song and the last have a Chris Isaak feel to them. In "Sweet Mystery" an accordion twinged Louisiana feel takes the lead. "Miracle Mile" has a nice funky beat, and the Lou Reed sounding vocals by Vaughn could fit right in the Velvet Underground. Alison Y. Reid provides gospel influenced backing vocals on the chorus and are hauntingly delivered. With "Never Too Late" Shindignation(tm) attack the jazz influenced genre. The slick guitar riffs precision placed and the muted trumpet give this song an old time feel. Although they fancy themselves to be in the Pop genre I think Adult Contemporary is a better fit. The soft sounds and sing along vocals are more fitting to that neighborhood. The production values are top notch with an assist on the mastering to, Joe Hight at the Soundlab at discmakers. Using a mixture of rock, funk, blues, jazz and gospel this duo has put together a fine body of work both professionally presented lyrically smart. For more Shindignation(tm) go to http://www.sonicbids.com/shindignation or http://www.myspace.com/shindignation.

Bio

Scott Karath is a versatile songwriter and guitarist. He started playing guitar as a teenager, and his first band "Izra" was started at Barnstable High in Cape Cod Massachusetts. A graduate of Berklee College of Music in Boston, Scott studied with, Pat Martino, Joe Pass, Mike Stern, Juan Mercadal and Bill Pierce.

He's played with Vinnie Colaiuta, and had bands with Victor Bailey, Jeff Sipe, and Mark Ledford. At Berklee he first met Rita Paterno, who was sitting in on classes at the time. Scott plays guitar, violin, drums, keys, electronic drums, programming and produces his music with Rit.

Scott and Rit have put together a few bands. 2.3 kids was their first venture, which developed into The Ricardos, who played the very limited local music scene on Cape Cod, and various venues in Boston. After moving to Los Angeles for a few years, then returning to Cape Cod, technology finally gave Scott and Rit a chance to produce the music they love.

Rit Karath, (nee Paterno), is a self trained musician. She sings, plays piano, guitar and bass, but her real love is producing and engineering. Rit was born in Detroit, grew up in Ontario, Canada, Ohio, California and Virgina, and has kept moving ever since. Her hat has been hanging on Cape Cod Mass for a while now.

Together Scott and Rit showcase the talents of local artists in their hometown area of Cape Cod, Massachusetts such as Stephanie Corby, Ty Newcomb, Alison Reid, Bob Thayer, Dana Deignan, Jim Craven, Malcolm Granger, Phil Banner, and Rick O'Neil.

They are currently working on their next project.
