Biography

French band SHINE formed in 2003 when three eclectic musicians brought their different styles together to create a sound as innovative as it is alluring. Seemingly brought together by fate, Songwriter Guillaume Simon met electronic, rock and jazz instrumentalist Laurent Houdard by chance at a jazz club and found a kindred spirit when their talked turned to a shared desire to create something new and explore a Pop sound. They soon joined forces with guitarist/sound engineer Antoine Delecroix, and the three clicked immediately.

SHINE produced its first EP, “One Day,” in June 2004, recording in Laurent’s home studio in Paris. The album received airplay in both the U.S. and Europe with hit singles “Ashbury” and “One Day” that seamlessly blend mellow rock with Electronica. The first pressing of the album sold out in a few months. The EP received another boost when acclaimed Producer/DJ Morgan Page remixed “Ashbury,” and the reworking found a place on the hit ABC TV show Ugly Betty.

In early 2008, SHINE’s first full-length album, “The Common Station,” was released. With inspired song writing brought to life by the soulful vocals of Moroccan singer Hanane Laraki, “The Common Station” resonated with audiences and critics worldwide. The album reached the number one slot on Soma FM’s Lush chart in 2009.

Although initially a studio project, SHINE’s commanding live presence in undeniable. Ever since they opened for Sia in London 2004, the band has built a stage identity that feels intimate and visceral, yet honest and accessible. Since then, high-profile audience members Dido and Tricky have passed along their complements of SHINE’s style and sound. Most recently, SHINE has toured with Morcheeba in France and Italy. Paul Godfrey of Morcheeba sent along his personal sentiments to SHINE, saying “Your music is great, wonderful in every way!”

In July 2008, SHINE teamed up with the legendary Terry Reid for a special project, “SHINE featuring Terry Reid.” The project began when Guillaume watched the documentary Glastonbury Fayre and was floored by Terry Reid’s talent. The band knew they had to find a way to work with Terry. A demo of “Mind Dance” convinced Terry to cross the Atlantic. The EP “SHINE featuring Terry Reid” was recorded in two days in June 2009.

“Here are two artists who should be massive in their own right, as a team they are mind blowing," said Tony K of the Winelight Club in the UK, where SHINE and Terry Reid performed live in August. “Mind Dance” was Julian Lennon’s pick of the week on San Francisco’s popular chill-out radio show, Below Zero.

Members from the live configuration, Guillaume, Antoine, Laurent, Julie Gomel (vocals) and Bendja (drums) have just released the new album, Judas and Mary. “It’s our best team ever,” Guillaume said. The artists of SHINE are learning from the brilliant talents they have collaborated with and are continuously expanding their own personal style. With the simple and honest goal of creating great music, SHINE is a talent to watch.

Lyrics

soulful music

Written By: Guillaume SIMON

Red stars brave the rain
Real love still flows in our veins
Lights up but i can barley see
Who we are or claim to be

Red flags left the main
Real shame has grown in our lanes
Sometimes hard to understand
I hear his sweet words again

My dad joined the west
Somewhere he could be the best
I've never heard about him since
Red stards attended my needs

Right through
Right through you
Like a brand new
Soulful music

you're playing in my head
and secretly

Breaks through
breaks through you
Right through
Like a brand new
Soulful music

Right through
Right through you
Like a brand new
Soulful music

ashbury

Written By: Guillaume SIMON

Call me honey
And dance to me again
Like if you were stone

On the pick-up
An L.P's spinning Art and Paul
Mrs Robinson

Let's have fun
Bring me to the sun
I wanna hit the road and run
Back to Ashbury
Where we used to be young heros baby

When we met
We shared a house with friends
No matter what we got in hands

We did make up
A whole new way of life
With no gun no knife

Let's have fun
Bring me to the sun
I wanna hit the road and run
Back to Ashbury
Where we used to be young heros

But are we the same
I guess we've changed
And all dreams come to the end

in the midlife zone

Written By: Guillaume SIMON

Babe some women grieve
Some women leave
And i'm staying there
Feel like going nowhere but to hell

Please, forgive my run
I'm like a bird
Flying away from all we learned
In the midlife zone
In the midlife zone
Kiss little prince for me
Tell him, tell him i'm sorry
And so it goes

and so it goes

Babe some women blame
Some women fail
And i'm one of them
Will i commit again
Am i sane

Love became a threat
Worse a regret
And i hurt you still now that i'm gone
In the midlife zone
In the midlife zone
Don't be sad over me
Turn your tears into stories
And so it goes

and so it goes

I used to love you so
What happened i don't know
There is no medecine
No trick to act as if we began

I used to love you so
What happened i don't know
Babe, there is no medecine
No trick to prevent me from leaving

rest your head on me

Written By: Guillaume SIMON

What did i do
Did i say
To make us fail
To make me pay
The price for my dreams, my sins

Four years ag
I stood up and left
My colleagues, my job
No regrets
I had a path to take

Look to the sun, to me
We can be one and free
Look to the sun, to me
I'm on your side whatever you decide
We can be one and free
There's nothing better than a life with you

Too many wounds on the way
I wanna talk
I wanna share
Joys and despairs
Stay, stay, 'till the day

Look to the sun, to me
We can be one and free
Look to the sun, to me
I'm on your side whatever you decide
We can be one and free
There's nothing better than a life with you

Every nightfall
I face a wall
Rest your head on me
Nothing has changed
Here i am stuck again
Rest your head on me
The costume is worn
My make-up has gone
Rest your head on me
There's no use of even cry
I must have deserved it all
Rest your head on me

Mind Dance (feat. Terry Reid)

Written By: Guillaume Simon

She’s picking up the phone
Leaving me on the edge
Riding sledge

Am I supposed to beg
To turn myself in for a day
What the hell

Am I doing here talking
To a wide endless ceiling
This is what she calls mind dance

The more I let it go
The more I hear the tinkling of her chain of keys

Reminds me of the time
When I got caught shoplifting
What the hell

Am I doing here talking
To a wide endless ceiling
This is what she calls mind dance
This is what she calls mind dance
This is what she calls mind dance
