Shirley Green

 Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA
BandAlternativeRock

Experimental, atmospheric modern rock with emotionally-unstable undertones. You may taste hints of melon and bergamot.

Biography

They may have brushed their teeth next to each other every morning for years. They most certainly endeavored to raise a child together, move cross country and back, and share much of the minutiae of daily life.

Making music together? This was a decision that took a bit longer.

Fourteen years into their relationship, Shirley Green bandmates and spouses Alixe Rheeve (vocalist/keyboardist/main songwriter) and Jason Rieve (drums/recording/production) finally took the plunge and made the ultimate commitment:  They formed a band.

From day one, sexy sax man (and synth player) John Schiefelbein helped round out this original female-fronted group.

John brought A) A calm reserve to Shirley Green and B) A lot of knowledge from years of playing out in the Milwaukee area.

Translation/present-day meaning:
A) John's calm ways "ground" his bandmates, and
B) John discovered beguiling moves that charm The Ladies.

Soon the cosmos shook again, delivering guitarist Tom Robinson. Suddenly, Tom's long-ago wedding day serenade to Alixe and Jason had a spot on Shirley Green's musical timeline.

It was 2013, and the group had officially formed.  It was a band partnership delivered on a magic carpet of aligned stars.

On Their Sound:  The band describes their music as “experimental, atmospheric modern rock with emotionally-unstable undertones". Shirley Green songs are vivid, quirky and held together by a common thread of strong melodies. Their songs often run deep.

Lyrics

1994

Written By: Alixe Rheeve

Verse:
Remember the day?
I remember the day
When all my carefree musings failed to play

Who I’d been and all the promise I had shown
Now a new reality that I must own

Do you remember the day?
I remember the day
No matter where I ran I couldn’t get away

Looked in the mirror - shocked - because its all the same
But opposite - its almost like a rabbit hole game

Piano solo

Chorus:
You can care
You can help, if you want to
While I fade away, fade away

Sorry I couldn’t be what you wanted
Just go away, go away

Verse:
Do you remember the year?
I remember the year
1994 - my life disappeared

I’ve learned to live
Pursuing dreams, chasing my past
Big little girl I hope to see again at last

Do you remember the way?
I don’t remember the way
I try so hard to leave but no, somehow I stay

Looked in the mirror - shocked - because its all the same
But opposite - its almost like a rabbit hole game

Piano solo

Chorus:
You can care
You can help, if you want to
While I fade away, fade away

Sorry I couldn’t be what you wanted
Just go away, go away

Bridge/Outro:
Falling asleep
Will I wake to the spell?
Tumbled out, now I’m in
I remember feelin’

Don’t make me go back
I can’t take it no more
Don’t make me go back
I can’t take it no more

Keep on, keepin’ on
There’s more life to be played
But that doesn’t mean
I’m happy I stayed

Keep on, keepin’ on
There’s more life to be weighed
But that doesn’t mean
I’m smiling I played

I can’t take it no more
I can’t take it no more

Paper Doll

Written By: Alixe Rheeve

I will cut you up
Make you my paper doll
I’ll hang you from my window
Strung across my window
Watch light shine through your pieces
I’ll take your multiple pieces
Pieces. Ooo, oh, pieces

Make you my snowflake
I will make you my one-of-a-kind
I’ll toss you from the sky
Falling from the sky
Then you will twist and float
And make your way into my pile of snowflakes
But you won’t be the first or last

I will cut you up
Make you my paper doll
I’ll hang you from my window
Strung across my window
Watch light shine through your pieces
I’ll take your multiple pieces
Pieces. Ooo, oh, pieces

Bridge
Wait. And watch you
Humble on the ground
I think I’ll have you with a nice wine

Muse, your parts are
Less fun when you’re around
I think I’ll taste you with a nice wine

Nowhere to escape I’ve got you deep inside the clutches of my mind
I think I’ll have you with a nice wine

Futile but it may be best you try your hand
to see what you can find
I think I’ll taste you with a nice wine

Nice....wine

Repeat Verse-Chorus (x2)
