Discography

Hypothetically, I would like to begin with a 3-5 song concept ep, marketed to a highly-targeted audience: the international tango dance scene. Marketing could occur through click-through advertising on tango-related websites, internet radio stations, direct mailing to select, influential tango DJs, and on-site distribution at key tango festivals. For a (very rough) sense of what this ep would sound like, please take a look at my new myspace page:

Bio

My name is Patrick "Shoaf" Gray, and I am the manager, lead vocals, and chief dance performer for the Yale Tango Orchestra. I am open to almost any proposal in the genres of jazz, tango, alt. country, gospel, or bluegrass. Hypothetically, however, I am looking for a producer and/or record label to help me finance, record, and distribute a 3-5 song concept ep of jazz + tango fusion music. If this proves successful, then I would love to continue the relationship with a full-length album. The music could be marketed at least initially to a highly-targeted audience, the international tango dance scene, through tango-related websites such as www.tangodj.org, www.knowtango.com, and eng.tango.info, as well as at select domestic and international tango festivals. If this proves successful, then we could also aim at a larger contemporary adult audience.

Tango dancing has exploded in popularity in the last 10-12 years to become an international club scene phenomenon. Alternative tango music groups such as the GOTAN Project and Tanghetto have gone platinum and multiplatinum. Relatively simple, unadorned, unpretentious jazz vocals such as those of Norah Jones, Chet Baker, and Jamie Cullum also have experienced a surge in popular interest. Tango + jazz music would ideally simultaneously appeal to 1. an international, dedicated club scene 2. jazz aficionados looking for something different and 3. pop-minded, mainstream adult listeners.

For more specific information, including itemized cost run-downs and market estimates, please contact me directly at patrick.gray@yale.edu or by phone at 203-675-7856. I am an accomplished tango dancer and well-connected in the US scene. The ep I am proposing here could be produced remarkably inexpensively, all things considered, and I think that sales in the tango community alone would probably recoup production expenses. The musicians that I would like to work with are young and will therefore work relatively cheaply. However, it would nonetheless cost more to produce a professional-quality ep of this kind than I as a student can easily afford. If you have questions, please contact me. 203-657-7856. patrick.gray@yale.edu. I can explain things in more detail.

I look forward to hearing from you!
