Bio

With a laid back cadence the scenes of a fast life play out in the vivid lyricism and sporty slang of Shoebox Benny. While being raised on the chaotic Westside of Chicago, the young Benny would began to take to the late night activity in his neighborhood that was overrun with gang violence and open air drug operations. But spending his adolescence and most of his adult life fleeing police, escaping shoot-outs, and trafficking drugs can overwhelm the mind of any man after a period of time, and Benny is no exception. Stating that “ I was always trying to battle this feeling of hopelessness, of knowing my future was really no future at all…a day-after-day grind of trying to do any and everything possible just so I could make it back home to my kids free and in one piece is what became my life. That’s when I knew I wasn’t going to make it through another summer. If you’re a hustler out here that ain’t in it for the money, then you’ve already lossed your mind and your motivation, then it’s only a matter of time before something catches up.” Having developed a passion for rap music at a young age, Shoebox was influenced most by the artists he felt conveyed an unadulterated truth in their music. He cites the inspiration of classic albums such as The Notorious B.I.G.’s Life After Death, Jay-Z’s Reasonable Doubt, Tupac Shakur’s Makaveli, Common’s BE, and Young Jeezy’s Trap or Die as being paramount in his own development as an artist. As a form of hobby, Benny would sporadically showcase his rhyming talent in impromptu ciphers around his neighborhood, and open mics throughout the city. Liking his steady incline of skill to that of a basketball player having an “8 inch growth spurt in one summer” the budding mc made a plan to commit to making the type of music that could be as influential to the hip-hop culture as the legendary standards set by those before him. After years of dealing with issues related to addictions, unsettling paranoia, and the inconsistent highs and drastic lows of hustling, Shoebox Benny rededicated his motives to present images in detail ranging from keenly sharp to intently graphic. With a slick baritone vocal presence coupled with a delivery of brash metaphors transitioning in-and-out of criminal innuendo, Shoebox Benny has the capability to intoxicate listeners with a steady flow of quotable lines and highlight verses. The rapper says that his music “is of two minds. The one mindset I grew up with was just thirsty to be in it full fledged, no apologies, so I have mannerisms and experiences that reflect that and I draw off of those when the mood of the record is appropriate. But I still have a mind that wants to analyze my actions, and then come up with the answer as to why those actions took place. That’s what my records aim to be, a more natural process of contradictions, mood swings...just an authentic delivery of a story without the superhero mask.”
