"Band Name of the Week Returns!"

Due to some long-time-coming vacation needs, I was forced to abandon my post as the Band Name of the Week guru for the last few weeks, but BNotW is back (read all about it here)! And—as I’m sure you can tell from the awesome artwork displayed here—we’ve got a doozy to ring this thing back into action. Ladies and gentlemen, behold Portland’s Shredosaurus Rex!

Though I expected this quartet to play face-melting guitar solos and embody a sort of master-shredder metal aesthetic, it turns out Shredosaurus Rex is more of a Pixies-esque power indie-rock band. And, based on just a few listens, they’re not half-bad. The music is catchy, boppy, rockin’—all the things folks tend to enjoy in a pop/rock quartet—but, honestly, they aren’t that shreddin’.

Oh, well. They’ve got sharks wearing mustaches and T-Rexes surfing and playing flaming Flying-V guitars, which is enough for me. And I’m eager to see what the Rex has to say for itself, since the band appears to have quite the sense of humor. Case in point: Shred Rex is comprised from the ashes of a couple of now-defunct “screamcore” bands, one of which was entitled “Cosby You Black Entertainer” (a play on Godspeed You Black Emperor!, for those of you who’ve been living in caves for the past decade or so). Yup. I’ll think I just leave ya with that.
