Bio

Captivating singer/songwriter/producer Pele is a fiery, soulful performer who takes his listeners on a voyage to where the heart, soul and mind meet.  His lyrics, introspective of his Polynesian roots, encompass the marrow of Pacific life from a westernized point of view.

Pele hails from South Auckland, New Zealand - a nation where the sport 'rugby' is their religion. "My family has a history of rugby players and I was groomed to be one" says Pele. "Although I loved sport my whole being was fascinated with music and the arts. Growing up, music was everywhere - home, streets, school, church, even on the rugby field - music is like my siamese twin, we're inseparable."

Pele grew up in the town of 'Otara' also known as the 'ghetto of New Zealand'.  Later in life, he was able to collaborate alongside fellow youth mentors to give back to his community by guiding and nurturing upcoming musicians and sports athletes. "As a Pacific Islander growing up in NZ, I felt rejected by my own Pacific people because I wasn't so much into our culture as our elders were. I also felt the same way towards New Zealand, as this country was not the origins of my ancestors. So whenever I was asked where I was from, I would just say 'Otara, I'm an Otarian.' Because growing up in Otara was where I learned about life - the good, the bad and the ugly - this was where I felt accepted. Had some tough times and as you know better in life you do better. I'm grateful that I got the time to turn my life around - unlike some of my brothers from the hood - to then share my experience and knowledge with the local youth."

Pele, who is also the founder & frontman of duo "Cydel", has awards to his credit including the Pacific Music Award for Best Urban Artist for their debut album "Soul Finder".  When asked about his 2nd album "Rootsville", "I've nicknamed that album 'One Day'," chuckles Pele.  "That's because I damn' wrote and composed that entire album in one day!  I remember that actual moment too, my creative juices were on tap, blasted my voice through the night and my pen wouldn't stop."

Pele not only credits RnB, Soul & Reggae as his favourite types of genre but also hip hop.  "My mother bought me my first tape by hip hop legends 'Run DMC' so co-producing artist 'GiantKilla's' debut album was a big tick on the bucket list for me. Hip hop runs deep in me. It helped me get through some of my roughest times especially on the streets."

After traveling to and fro performing in the USA since 2007, Pele will be basing himself in Los Angeles at the end of 2014.  "As a musician it makes more sense for me to live in L.A. There are more opportunities to express my craft there and have all my four cylinders going. Exploring my talents and making more good music is all I ever want to do."
