Siba

Born in the cosmopolitan city of Recife, but from a family until this day linked to its rural origins, Siba grew up between these two worlds, as distinct parts of a single entity. From his first encounters with the traditions of the Mata Norte he began a long history of learning and collaboration, exercising through the years the fundamentals of the art of rythmic poetry, becoming on the main masters of the new generation of ciranda and maracatu nowadays.

At the same time, as a member of Mestre Ambrosio’s group, he developed an innovative and personal musical language, where the dialogue between traditional and cosmopolitan, past and present, street and stage are an unmistakable brand.

In 2002 after seven years living in the city of São Paulo, Siba decided to return to Pernambuco state to reunite the Fuloresta band. In 2003, in a mobile studio in the rural zone in Nazaré, Fuloresta recorded their first CD , that also was released in Europe by the French label, Outros Discos.

The band played in different venues in Brazil and also did three tours in Europe from 2004 to 2006, in countries like France, Holland, Germany and Belgium, developing as time passed a unique manner of adapting the music from long duration street parties to the condensed stage format. "We never experience our past or tradition as a cage. On the contrary, our tradition offers us a vast vocabulary, and we do our best to use all of it every day and especially all night long. It is impossible to reproduce the way we involve the whole community in poetry and collective dancing during the whole night, although the hour or 90 minutes that a festival can offer us will provide a very good opportunity to catch a glimpse of our actual musical impact.” as Siba explains.

Siba released in 2007, your second CD with Fuloresta: “Toda vez que eu dou um passo/O mundo sai do lugar” (“Every step I take the world changes place.), in partnership with “Ambulante Discos”, a label owned by producer Beto Villares, who is also Siba´s partner in “Fuloresta do Samba”. It was nominee to the latin Grammy.

With Fuloresta he did 6 internationals tours for countries like France, Belgium, Portugal, Spain, Italy, Austria, Germany.

Now, Siba is releasing his new album AVANTE. This album brings Siba to a new contemporary and modern moment, when he is returning to play guitar with a very diferent format of band: guitar, keyboard, drum and tuba.

Avante got 4 stars at Rolling Stone and Billboard Magazine, and the most important cultural magazine in Brasil, BRAVO, gave 4 pages about Siba and his creation.

Siba is one of the most important songwriter of the new generation of the brazilian music.

Avante will be release all over the world by Mais Um Discos from London, in June, 2012.

Short Glossary of Terms:

Maracatu: a common term to describe performance genres found in Pernambuco state in northeastern Brazil: maracatu rural and maracatu nação.

Maracatu de baque solto: rooted in the Pernambucan interior and evolved in the early 20th century as a fusion of pre-existing forms of Carnival revelry. It is considered to be Afro-indigenous in origin. Its members, typically sugarcane workers, are involved with the native-influenced Catimbó religion. Maracatu rural has a high participation rate with dozens of groups operating all over the state.

Sarau: A sarau is a cultural or musical event in which people reunite to express themselves artistically. A sarau may involve poetry, acoustic music and other forms of art such as painting and acting. The word sarau is of Portuguese/Brazilian origin.

Ciranda: In the ciranda or “circle”, a group of people hold hands, sing, dance simple steps, and play instruments, and are free to come and go as they please. When the hypnotic rhythym changes is the cue for a change of direction, and people of all ages may join in the dance which can last all night long. The most famous “cirandeira” is Lia de Itamaracá from Pernambuco state.
