Bio

Sibyllashone was born in the winter of 2010 when the then 21-year-old enfant-terrible poet Valerie Hsiung (b.1989) left a nudist, polyamorous cult (which she had helped lead and at once considered her family) and put her poetry and voice together to begin making what has now become a psychedelic soul experience of its own. Raised in the Bluegrass hills of Cincinnati and the Mojave desert of Las Vegas, Hsiung later studied literary translation and ecologic arts at Brown University, leaving school for a year after sophomore year and supported herself as a traveling organic farmer. After completing and publishing her two debut books of poetry to critical acclaim within the avant-garde poetry and art world during 2013, Hsiung moved to Brooklyn, New York in order to pursue more performance opportunities. Within the first few months, Sibyllashone played at venues including The Bitter End, PIANOS, Cake Shop, Matchless, and many others. During this time, Hsiung sent her demo to sound engineer and percussionist (known for collaborations with Sonic Youth, SWANS, Laurie Anderson, etc), Wharton Tiers, who will be working with her on her forthcoming first full-length record--IS, or The Moon Is Not Safe. At once primal and futuristic, the sound of Sibyllashone is heavily influenced by unusual polyrhythms and ecstatic harmonies. The lead vocalist-lyricist and songwriter, Hsiung is known for her expressive voice--which has been compared to Billie Holiday--and her high-energy, fully-embodied performances.
