“Sibyl Vane is one of the most notable newcomers in the Baltics in year 2012. A trio from Estonia’s small coastal town Pärnu has done a lot so far. After winning the Estonian Youth band contest they signed under a Latvian record label I Love You Records. After performing at the biggest summer music festivals in the Baltics – Positivus and Summer Sound, the band arrived to the studio in order to record their debut album. While working in the studio they started their first tour in Latvia and Lithuania. Their debut album “Love, Holy Water & TV” was introduced on November 1st.”

Sibyl Vane biography

The trio named after Oscar Wilde’s tragic hero, started their journey in spring 2010. Sibyl Vane was founded by locally alternative rock band guitarists Heiko Leesment and Helena Randlaht. Located in Estonia’s small coastal town Pärnu, they started it as a one-time project and asked Mark Kostrov to join them on drums. After the first show, there was another and all that is now part of the band’s history.

Up until autumn of 2011 the band was living in rehearsing rooms for days in order work on their material. The hard work and time spent on developing their own handwriting in music is the basis of the sound we hear in Sibyl Vane’s music – the popish and bluesy alternative rock, led by front woman Helena Randlaht’s unique voice. The band’s first single “What’s My Name” became Estonia’s radio stations’ favourite after winning the Estonian youth band competition’s grand prix.

2012 became a real breakthrough year for the band. Previously hardly known, the trio was now being played daily in all radio stations. That year they also had four singles that reached the TOP 10 played songs in Estonian radio stations. In spring they signed to a Latvian record label I LOVE YOU Records. At the same time a Finnish music industry blog NRGM published an article about newcomers in Estonian music scene, naming Sibyl Vane as the band with the most potential for international breakthrough. In spring they were hosted by major Baltic music festivals Positivus and Summer Sound.

At the beginning of autumn 2011 Sibyl Vane started its first tour in the Baltics. Free moments were spent working in the studio, recording material for their debut album. The album titled “Love, Holy Water & TV” was introduced on November 1st and was also the start of the tour baring the same name, which lasted until the end of the year. Well received by critics in Estonia and other countries, the album was presented with 20 shows taking place all over the Baltics. In the middle of the tour, Sibyl Vane was invited to support legendary Garbage at their show in Riga.

At the end of the year the album reviews are published in all Estonian media outlets. “Love, Holy Water & TV” receives a warm welcome from the critics. In addition to Estonia, positive reviews also published in Latvia and Belgium. The Portuguese magazine DeezMag also wrote about the doings of Sibyl Vane.

At the beginning of 2013, the web-based music channel Balcony TV releases an acoustic live performance of the song „Sugar High which was filmed in December in Kaunas, Lithuania. Sibyl Vane becomes the first Estonian band to perform in that legendary music channel. At the end of January Sibyl Vane recorded their first TV concert in the Raadio 2 and ETV2 coproduced program „R2 Live” at Tallinn’s Rock Cafe. UK’s music site Live4ever.co.uk also selected Sibyl Vane’s single “Honey Tree” to be in their weekly “New Tuned Guide” list.

In March, 2013 the readers of the Finnish magazine Soundi vote Sibyl Vane to be the best Estonian performer at Tallinn Music Week 2013. Later that month Radio Mania decides to give the band the „Year’s Surprise“ title. In April Sibyl Vane performs a sold out concert at Von Krahl as a part of Tallinn Music Week. - Hagstrom Guitars

SIBYL VANE is a brand new Estonian band releasing their first record and already getting nice reviews! Well, this one will be part of a long list of very positive reviews too! SIBYL VANE has what it takes to become a really well-known and very good band: good musicians and a female singer who can really sing and knows how to handle a microphone. I'd label this music as straightforward indie rock which can match with the greatest. It's hard to find something negative to say, even if I'd wanted to. Instead, I hear one nice song after the other. 'Door in the Floor' is the perfect opener: simple and laying out what to expect. 'Get Out of Town' has a slight No Doubt flavour and sounds almost addictive, making you slightly move along with the beat and sing out loud. 'What's My Name' is a song that would fit with the opening track of the series of True Blood, I love the bassline and the little bluesy/country and rock sound. Sounds a bit melancholic and that's just the way I love it (this was by the way the first single). I'm totally into the flow. 'Supersonic' is a bit more rock and I like the lyrics, just as the way they are sung. Being the support act of Garbage will help them a lot and get them more airplay. Just like on 'E & A', where I can almost hear a live sound and can easily imagine them on stage and, to me, this is how a good record should sound! Pure, energetic, Helena Randlaht doesn't need computer trics or manipulations that correct her voice... So this is really pure gold! - Peek-A-Boo Music Magazine
