Band Review: Sick of Sarah

Sick of Sarah
Homebase: Minneapolis, MN

Here's a fun band that probably gets some asses movin' at the local bars. This all-chick quartet bring the pop-punk angst with not-so-hidden lyrical intent. The guitar work is fantastic - each note is handled with purpose while the drums are meaningful in supporting the song as a whole. The harmonies and vocal accents flesh out the tunes appropriately.

My favorite tunes are "Mr. Incredible" with it's exciting chorus and "Mother Fucker" with it tasteful clash of your-loss-not-mine lyrics and stylish acoustics.

"You know you'll never meet another motherfucker like me", sings Abisha Uhl in that innocent Lisa Loeb type of way.

The only complaint I have for the recording is the bass tone - I think it needs to more flavor and definition, especially since it plays such a vital roll in several tunes.

The last track was recorded live. Without the original recording to go by, it made me dislike this song even more - beyond the fact that it was poorly recorded. I think the audio was taken from a video recording or handheld tape deck. For an EPK that's designed to impress potential fans and promoters, this song does not represent the band very well at all -but don't hold that against them. They're on tour now so go see 'em.

"Buzzcatcher - SPIN Magazine"

SPIN (December 2007)

"The women who make up this Minnesota quartet bow at the altar of
riot grrrls' days gone by while simultaneously thumbing their noses
at scowling chick-rock cliches. The songs are as bracing as they are
familiar." - SPIN Magazine

"Rock3Music.com reviews "Bittersweet" EP"

Sick Of Sarah – Bittersweet

Sick Of Sarah have a story to how they got the name but its not as good as the story’s they spin in their elegant rock pop songs. With a voice that bleeds and able to swing from brash to sweet hovering over humm along melodies 'Sick Of Sarah' entrance in a way that convinces you to leave the play button on repeat.

'Bittersweet' is the bands second release and is a three track EP that opens with the title song which is as good as any you are likely to hear with Abisha Uhl's vocals displaying an articulation of belief rare to find, the second song 'Good Morning' could only have been written from experience while the last song 'Paint Like That' is a thoughtful acoustic track that roundly displays Sick Of Sarah's talents.

Bio

They aren't sick of Sarah -- actually, they love Sarah.

The band, Sick of Sarah, was named when lead singer Abisha Uhl, 25, was talking to her roommate, Sarah, who was complaining that she didn't like her name, that she was "sick of Sarah." Uhl was inspired to use it as the name of her band, which originally was Sparkle Motion. After learning there were hundreds of other bands with the same name, they decided to go by Sick of Sarah.

Sick of Sarah, an all-girl band of boundless energy met through mutual friends in 2005. They are releasing their self titled debut album in summer of 2008. The band which has a strong local following in their hometown of Minneapolis are beginning to draw attention nationally. It was after winning the MTV virtual Kaya’s Battle of the Bands they released a single “Bittersweet” through LA indie Adamant Records. That single caught the attention of Spin Magazine which compared them to the Breeders and Sleater-Kinney in a “Buzzcatcher” story.

Minneapolis serves as a symbol of the Sick Of Sarah sound. The city has served as the breeding ground for some of the most iconic and diverse music, from Prince to Bob Dylan to the Replacements and Husker Du. Sick of Sarah is five young women with five different tastes in music. The debut album is an amalgam of these disparate influences; a confluence of John Fogerty, Sleater-Kinney, Michelle Branch, Babes In Toyland, and Joan Jett to name only a few. "We write all our own stuff; it qualifies as indie pop-rock," says Abisha Uhl. "It is very melodic. We like sweet melodies and ballads, but we also like punk and the edgier stuff.” Uhl further describes the music as "crazy, fun and obnoxious."

The band only in their 20’s aren’t sick of much. They love touring, recording and causing general mischief.
