"SIGNATURE SERIES – SPOTLIGHT ARTIST OF THE WEEK!"

The feeling creeps up on you…
Motel lights reflect off freshly rained streets…
Silhouettes drop in and out from a 57’ Dodge….
Something inside tells you “Bad Ju-Ju about to go down”…AND THEN THERE IS THAT SOUND!
A kickin bass drum mixed with Fat Beats, and the soulful sounds of Gangster Horns meander through your senses.
This is SIGNATURE SERIES!
A brand new member to The Holding Pattern and one we think will make some serious waves in the industry.
They hail from Briz Vegas that ever growing hub of creativity and cool…I don’t know what’s in the water up there but whatever it is…it’s good!
A 5 track introduction to this Hip Hop, Rap & Soul outfit that is sure to get your ass moving!
Like Heist That?!
A rapturous track that starts out with a slamming drum track interrupted so deliciously by horns stabbing into the rhythm and with some smooth rap/spoken word dressed like rich thick cream on your cake.
These guys could quite possibly the love child of Skunkhour, The Roots & The Daptones if they got freaky together in the 1970's. Dripping with such old school sounds and beats that even the coolest cop on the block “Shaft” couldn’t pin these suckas down!
Try this stand out track that will be their hit single (ft. Georgia Potter) Corner of 4th & 58th
SIGNATURE SERIES deliver hard-boiled soul and hip hop that sets itself apart from the rest of Australian music. With a wide range of musical influences from Detroit’s classic soul, Brooklyn’s conscious hip hop and 1950's Film Noir. Fronting the crew is CHICO MENDEZ on vox, rhymes and classic guitar, laying it down with Rhythm Section, percussion, Horns, Keys & Samples and female soul backing vox. SIGNATURE SERIES can form up to an 8 piece crew.
Try this on for size…Here Comes The Fuzz
Hip Hop and Bebop. Gangster Horns and Sampled Back-Alley twang. Tracks that speak to those Running from the Cops and Cheating Lovers, set against backdrops, old and new.
As elusive as they are to define, you can’t deny they have class.
A shaken martini of Hip Hop, Blues, Classic Soul, Harlem Shuffles & Brooklyn Scuffles!
Definition of “Signature:” A distinctive mark, characteristic, or sound indicating identity. A fitting definition for a band who will hit the scene in June 2012 to launch their new single ‘Corner of 4th & 58th’ ft. Georgia Potter and the anticipated EP ‘Rialto’, which has found play on both JJJ and Unearthed.
The Holding Pattern is super proud to have Signature Series as a brand new member and our Spotlight Artist Of The Week! - THE HOLDING PATTERN - 30th May 2012

"Interview: Rave Magazine"

CHICO MENDEZ, guitarist and vocalist for West End neo-soul exponents SIGNATURE SERIES, explains his group’s global origins. MORGAN JOHNSON counts her frequent flyer miles and learns more about the band’s forthcoming debut EP, Rialto.

MORGAN JOHNSON: How did Signature Series come to be?

CHICO MENDEZ: Funnily enough, it came out of the combination of a trip to Colombia, wanting to work with some Briz Vegas All-Stars and reading James Ellroy noir books. The stuff I was writing was definitely set in the 1950s and often involved characters that shared that sleazy, confidential world. I combined that with a lot of the styles of music from that era and blues and hip hop. I was in Colombia on ‘business’ and missed home, so I decided to book the studio for my return. When the sessions hit, I put the word out and got some great people on board.

MJ: You have horns, percussion and samples in your live show – who is the ringleader bringing it all under control?
CM: Well, to be straight up, me. I do have a solid live outfit and we work well together, jamming out ideas and I think the sound is a bit different from the other crews in the 4101. I do the writing and set out the format, but it is still collaborative. The thing is that on any given night there could be a new member, so it has to be fluid.

MJ: Given you named a single after it, have you been to The Corner Of 4th And 58th? What did you find there?
CM: Yes I have, in Brooklyn, NYC. The joint is called Irish Haven (Google it people) and is a beat up boozer. It was actually the bar used in the film The Departed I found out later. Cool place, a living stereotype. When I walked in I got talking to the bartender, asking what his story was. “Oh, I’m an outta work actor,” he said. Couldn’t believe it! Amazing how a four-dollar brew and an Australian accent loosens tongues.

MJ: How did Georgia Potter end up on the song?
CM: The co-producer and engineer was Peet G of Laneous & The Family Yah and Psi-Fi studios in the Valley. I had a few ideas for female vocals for this track as the chorus comes from a ‘50s Detroit soul track. Peet suggested Georgia, who I had never met before, so there was a bit of feeling the track out. She was amazing in her ability to give it energy and desperation. I think that this style was different from her usual thing.

MJ: Any word on how your EP is shaping up?
CM: The EP Rialto is coming along nicely. Would like to get back in the studio in the next month and do two more tracks to get it up to a seven-track. The way that Peet and I have worked has brought out some of the rough edges, but I plan everything to the last detail. If I had the dinero, I could have had this out in a week! But I dig the process, for sure. Those at the single launch will get some extra tracks as a thank you for supporting a brand new crew!

MJ: What are three words/catch phrases that best describe Signature Series?
CM: Shaken. Not stirred.

SIGNATURE SERIES launch their single, THE CORNER OF 4TH AND 58TH, at The Joynt on Friday Jun 15 with Schoolfight and DJ Watson. It’s $5 on the door. Check out Facebook for more. - Rave Magazine - MONDAY, 11 JUNE 2012

- The target. As elusive as they are to define, you can’t deny they have class. Primo suspect is CHICO MENDEZ, a Hip Hop Sinatra, surrounded by his gang of five. Bragging rights on the line, but I have to admit they have a certain something.
