"Signs of Warning – coming your way"

By Wendy Burton

— The band members of Signs of Warning aren’t your typical long-haired, “party ‘til you drop” maniacs.

They’re four kids who love music, are as different from one another as night from day and who put on an impressive musical performance each time they play.

Trenton Dennis, 13, sings and plays guitar. He’s also the shy one. But he’s also the “chick magnet,” to hear his bandmates tell it.

“Girls just walk up to me and ask me to sign their whole body, like their arms, with a Sharpie,” Trenton said, smiling and blushing.

Drummer Jordan Roberts, 12, is the comic relief.

“Oh, Trenton,” she said in a falsetto voice. “Sign my chin. Sign my eyeballs.”

Then she and the rest of the band laughed hysterically.

Millisa Henderson, 14, is a singer and guitar player. She is the ’80s “hair-band fanatic.”

“She spends all her time practicing guitar, like 24/7,” said Dakota Roberts, 14, who plays bass and sings. “Well, except when she has algebra homework.”

Millisa and the other bandmates laughed some more.

Dakota is the chatty one. Obviously creative, judging by her ability to hold a witty conversation, Dakota is also interested in writing songs someday.

The four of them formed the band in 2008 with a fifth member. But before their first gig, the fifth member dropped out.

The band’s first meeting with their manager, Raegan Medeiros, saw the kids create their “band rules.”

“Our No. 1 rule is you’re not allowed to date each other in the band,” Dakota said, causing everyone to grin and blush.

“It’s the quickest way to a band’s demise,” Medeiros said.

“Practice. Also, we’re all equal and no one is better than the other,” Trenton said.

The group decided what kind of music they would play — everything from classic rock to modern pop and heavy metal — and chose their name.

They began practicing together twice a week and had their first gig in July 2008.

Since then, they’ve performed at everything from school functions to Swon Brothers concerts — and they have a lot of fun doing it.

At one of their recent practices, the kids took the stage at John Michael’s Music, the store that sponsors the band, and began to perform.

People wandered in the store and were transfixed by the performance — one woman whipping out a cell phone and taking video of the kids’ extremely professional performance.

“Our goal right now is to not only keep getting them performances, but quality performances,” Medeiros said. “We want them to be able to play in front of a lot of people.”

Millisa Henderson

Millisa considers her style “hair-metal.” She likes to wear a top hat like a favorite guitarist and tease her hair to the max.

Millisa said her “rocker” mom got her interested in music.

“I was listening to ’80s hair metal in the womb,” Millisa said, laughing.

Her favorite guitarist is Randy Rhoades, who played for Ozzy Osbourne before Rhoades was killed in an 1982 plane crash, she said. She wants to attend Berkeley College of Music someday.

She remembers her first gig with Signs of Warning at age 12 at Summer Pride for Muskogee schools.

“The high school kids were all jumping around, taking off their shirts and swinging them around,” she said, laughing. “They yelled for us to play ‘I Love Rock and Roll’ a second time.”

Jordan Roberts

Jordan plays drums with ease — though she’s the tiniest member of the group and hard to see over the cymbals. She said she likes to wear a blouse and skirt to perform — and sometimes do her hair up in a pink mohawk.

Jordan knows she wants to attend college someday. She enjoys attending a Montessori school because “you don’t have to sit at desks, and you have more freedom.” Jordan also takes ballet lessons.

Her favorite drummer is Papa Roach’s Tony Palermo, whom she met at a music convention in California.

“We met lots of famous people, but he’s the only one that sat down and just talked to us,” Jordan said. “I was really scared, but he was really nice.”

Trenton Dennis

Trenton said his guitar — a triangular DBZ — is his favorite thing. “I like the clean sound. Yeah. That’s all,” he said.

But he’s pretty happy with being the only guy in the group.

“I get all the ladies,” he said with only a little b - Muskogee Phoenix
