Bio

Unique instrumentation, fusion of contrasting musical backgrounds and influences has led Silence in Contempt to great accomplishments in its first year of existence. Formed in the Fall of 2004, Silence in Contempt features Adam Pedersen on vocals, guitar and piano, Hugo Rivas on the drums and backup vocals, and Aaron Fuenning on violin. The three musicians crossed paths in a Denver Emergency Room while working as EMT's and Paramedics. They began playing together and soon discovered the intensity of their music is tantamount to the intensity of their careers in the Emergency Medical Field. Within a short time the three musicians established themselves as Silence in Contempt, performing their original music regularly in the Denver area, mesmerizing audiences with an intense sound and performance.

Originally from Leadville, CO, Adam Pedersen had been a soloist for years, performing original music that he described as "tragic folk songs." Adam had a vision of this music evolving into a bigger sound, hearing "an orchestra of accompaniment in my head, echoing, haunting me at night just before bedtime, daydreaming of a sound I've never heard in audible form, more like a schizophrenic hallucination from a locked room deep inside." This unheard sound began to come to life when Adam met drummer Hugo Rivas during what both musicians describe as "a turbulent era" in their lives. The two musicians felt an unspoken chemistry in their musical vision and felt their music take on a life of its own, carrying them along with it. "I think our similar state of mind and sanity." Adam said."But in no time this desperate escape and struggle turned instead into a quest. The ever evolving sound quickly found an axis to revolve around and each ellipse is smoother." Drummer Hugo remembers having the same innate reaction to the music they were creating, stating, "When we started to get together to play, it was all very spontaneous and so natural. this time there was something different, something more significant going on now and there was no stopping ."

Adam continued to write new songs and Hugo worked on the arrangements, adding a fierce, explosive dynamic to Adam's otherwise trance-like, emotional sound. Even during their first shows together, the audience was immediately drawn in by Adam's performance and continues to be by not only his songwriting abilities and emotional delivery, but also by the passion in with which he revolves. Describing his band mate, Hugo has said, "Adam is a soft-voiced and always deep in thought individual. But when it is showtime he will deliver blasts of sweet sound and motion. I can see his veins and neck nearly bursting and what can I say... The dude really blasts." Audiences are equally hypnotized by Hugo's creative style and technique. Originally from Peru, now residing in Denver he recalls, "I can't really place our music, nor I want to have limitations or parameters, just let it be.., we just feel it and give it all we got and it is so fun." Hugo brings a unique rhythm and character to the band which palpitates throughout their music. He says, "The Contempt has been and continues to be instrumental in helping me unfold my creativity. I was sidetracked from my artistic path, randomly playing around until I met Adam and things began to focus. Ever since then I can see I bit more clearly."

This music continued to evolve when violinist Aaron Fuenning joined Silence in Contempt in November 2004. Home schooled in Nebraska, Aaron learned how to play violin at age nine via the Susuki method, being taught first to play by ear and learning to read music later on. Seventeen years later, after numerous experiences with various orchestras, rock bands, and recordings, Aaron found himself on Hugo Rivas's doorstep.

Aaron walked into his first rehearsal and began improvising to Hugo's and Adam's music, mixing careful classical training with his other musical roots in Gospel, Folk, and Blues. Aaron has taken the band's sound in a direction that the band members never would have predicted. His sound is versatile, creating the atmosphere of silence and longing with a gentle violin melody during songs such as "Independence Day" and "The Ballad," carrying a song to a more upbeat feel with meticulous and precise fiddling during songs such as "The Country Song," and transforming songs entirely adding new life and creating new crowd favorites as he did with "What do I know." "I personally view Aaron as this mystery man," Adam said, "whose presence in sound and person acts as a balance against furor. But I'm not fooled. He's dark somewhere."

The band produces a sound that it is attractive to the soul and both the band members and SIC fans struggle to answer questions regarding the band's genre of music, some comparing their sound to bands such as Radiohead while others argue it's more comparable to Neil Young. The Band wont comment on it..However, all listeners do agree that watching SIC perform is a unique
