"Silverwire debuts live"

Sometimes a journey begins and you don't know where it will take you. For Denis Duquette it started with a guitar and his words. Four years later, Duquette and his new band Silverwire will kick off a new leg of a journey that Duquette started.

Made up of Duquette (guitar, vocals), his younger brother Eric (guitar), Matt Doiron (bass) and Serge Hall (drums), Silverwire could be classed as a rock band, but the complexity of their sound gives their listeners a wide range of style. From blues and reggae to funk and melodic noise, Silverwire creates a sound that is original and refreshing and doesn't make a home in a certain genre.

"At one point we had 10 or so songs done and at least eight of them sounded completely different," Duquette said. "[It was] at that point I became worried. I started to think 'what I was going to do' and then I just stopped caring. You want to have diversity in your music and you just have to write what you like." Silverwire originated without a drummer, something that Duquette believes really brought the sound together and into a whole new realm.

"It's interesting because it was just me, my brother and Matt for like a month," Duquette said. "It was good we were learning songs and getting used to each other and then Serge came along and added a whole new dynamic to the sound. One day Serge played a song differently on drums and when we finished the tune, everyone else said how much they liked the way he did it.

"I found we've really improved and the energy has really grown. We all get along really well. I mean my brother and I fight, but that's because we are brothers. Halfway through a jam or a song we'll just get into it, but that's our relationship." Before Silverwire was a reality, Duquette spent his time working on his own material after taking a two year absence from playing music.

"My first two years of university I put my guitar down. I didn't write or play at all," Duquette said as he sipped on a beer. "When I got back into it, I wrote two full albums of music in a year. It was stuff I enjoyed. I missed playing guitar." Drawing from a wide range of influences from Bob Dylan and Wilco, Duquette's heart-felt and emotional songs became the tracks that make up Silverwire's catalogue.

Duquette recorded two full albums of music within a year and a half, doing all the instrumentation himself. Watching what he originally recorded grow has been a pleasured experience for young songwriter.

"The way the songs have evolved has been great," Duquette said. "It's really exciting, being the primary songwriter, so far, and getting to see my songs take a new evolution. The transformation has been really positive. We're all really digging the music. When we play everyone is smiling and enjoying it." The songwriting, both lyrically and musically are a reflection of Duquette's experiences in life, a view of the road he has travelled thus far.

"I always wrote growing up," Duquette said. "It helped me deal with things going on in my life that I didn't necessarily want to talk about. If you're depressed you don't just want to write you are. You want to write around it, about your experiences.

"I write in bunches I've come to find out. Once it gets flowing you just go. I used to get the block, you know, where I couldn't get anything out. I just stopped fighting it. It doesn't work when you force it. One thing I learned is, when I'm out with people, friends and I hear something interesting said by someone else, or I think of something, I write it down now."

Duquette believes in the importance of taking in the world around you and not letting an idea get by.

"I mean, who knows what you write down could be for you in the future. It may be nothing, but you don't know when it's going to be that. It keeps your mind going." Silverwire will be making their live debut on Friday, November 3 at The Right Spot. Cover is $4. You can check out their music at myspace.com/silverwiremusic. - Here Magazine

Bio

2008 will no doubt be a successful year for Silverwire. Having signed to independent label, Quadraphonic Records, the band is gearing up for another promising session in the studio. The 4 piece Moncton group has been garnering acclaim for their loud, energetic and exciting live shows while honing their originally undefined sound to an innovative mixture of wailing guitar solos, sprinting baselines, powerful funk drumming and intelligent lyrics.

Silverwire began as a concept by lead singer/guitarist Denis Duquette. Moving from band to band throughout high school, Denis would eventually give up playing for several years throughout university, only to return as an even more prominent songwriter and vocalist. After recording 2 full albums he decided it was time to find the people who could help him bring his songs to a wider audience. Soon, younger brother Eric Duquette(Guitar) and his then bandmate Matt Doiron (Bass) were enlisted in the summer of 2006 to help bring the songs to life. The trio began rehearsing relentlessly and decided a drummer was needed. After a brief search, the position was filled with local funk veteran Serge Hall.

Silverwire began to play their first shows, but were also itching to get into the studio to record their first album. In the spring of 2007 the band sought out the services of producer/engineer Chris Mersereau (El Fuego, Sol). Due to very broad musical tastes, the band was able to successfully blend rock, pop, funk, blues, and folk aspects into their record, separating themselves from other acts. Silverwire’s debut album The Trip is available online and at the band’s live shows.
