I'm going to now review a song that anyone reading this blog will probably know (if you don't, first head on over to I'm going to review The Silver Wolf output song by song, because I feel like it. Violets an Roses is my favorite recorded song of theirs, and probably also, their 'hit". So here goes.

With the kind of opening riff that galvanizes your stomach and makes you take notice, "Violets and Roses" is pure rock and roll. The four chords that carry the bulk of the song-pounded out simultaneously on guitar and bass-are clipped, self-assured, no-nonsense. They mean business. The song grabs you by the eardrums and makes you sit up because it's familiar, but make no mistake, not contrived. With an organ that recalls early Dylan, guitar solos that spice up the song and give it a classic rock and roll feel, without ever even coming close to the self-indulgence and boorishness that some of the greatest rock and rollers have fallen victim to, bass and drums that give the song its incendiary kick, and vocals and lyrics that you can sing along to. The secret of The Silver Wolf Band is you've heard them before. They're equal parts hockey arena pre-game pump up, and your parents record collection, and I mean this in the best way possible. They take the best parts of classic rock-catchy tunes, virtuosic instrumentation (two of their members are in music school), and give them a young and fresh feel. They're everything you know to be great about rock music, without being predictable, or a nostalgia act. It's an extremely difficult line to walk, and one the band appear to walk with ease. Much of this can be attributed to the song craft; the driving melodies, witty lyrics, and universal themes. But a picture's worth a thousand words, so catch them live, because as great as they sound on your computer, they kick a thousand times more ass up close!

Silver Wolf Band - Jam the Blues EP
Official Release Date: September 28th, 2010

Silver Wolf Band is a folk-rock trio from Goose Bay, Labrador. They serve up a unique blend of folk and pop inspired rock n roll that is refreshingly simple, yet sophisticated, thanks to Matthew Barrett's piano prowess. Jamie and Justin provide a solid foundation of folk-rock drums and guitar, letting the piano become a defining characteristic of their sound, a perfect complement to the rhythms of the Jackman brothers.

"Keyboards play a large part in Silver Wolf Band’s sound – Matthew Barrett’s jazz-influenced piano and organ add an enticing depth and texture..." - Backdrifter, Grayowl Point, 2011

In 2010, Silver Wolf Band released its debut 7-song EP, "Jam the Blues," which featured original tunes described as youthful with mature lyrics that create a positive and enthusiastic vibe. The album was nominated by Music PEI for "Pop Recording of the Year" in 2011 and the band was invited to showcase at the ECMAs in Charlottetown, PEI, that spring.

"A sound that reminds the listener of what good sounding pop rock records are all about. These guys get it!" - Lloyd Doyle, Sandbar Music Group

Around this time, Silver Wolf Band enjoyed some radio-play, mainly in Atlantic Canada, being featured on such radio shows as Atlantic Airwaves, Mainstreet PEI, Labrador Morning, and Charlottetown's Ocean 100. In addition, they featured in lifestyle publication, Labrador Life Magazine.

"...enjoyable sound, strong vocals, and good music!" - Allan Debertan, CHSR-FM, UNB Campus Radio

Silver Wolf Band went on hiatus in 2011 for 5 years at which point they underwent a transformation, parting ways with bass player, Dan Clarke, amicably, on account of Jamie, Matthew, and Justin moving back home to Labrador from Prince Edward Island. The band is now a 3-piece made up of Jamie Jackman, who plays guitar and sings, and is also the band's songwriter and lyricist; Justin Jackman, who briefly played with well-known Labradorian singer/songwriter, Jacinda Beals, on drums; and, Music NL's 2-time "Music Educator of the Year" nominee, Matthew Barrett, providing piano, keyboards, and backing vocals.

Matthew and Jamie have played with Labrador Folk Legend, Harry Martin, a recipient of Music Newfoundland and Labrador's Lifetime Achievement Award. Members have also played large festivals and conferences such as the Newfoundland and Labrador Folk Festival, Expo Labrador, Northern Exposure, Northern Lights Business and Culture Conference and Showcase, Music NL Awards Gala, and a host of conferences, meetings, dinners, and forums of a corporate and political nature.

"Very strong emerging band in today's music scene." - Donna Roberts, former director for Music NL and Labrador Outreach Worker at Newfoundland and Labrador Arts Council
