I am a multi award winning singer\songwriter expressing my take on the world through song. Every song paints a picture and tells a story that I am compelled to tell. I like to use my voice dynamically and intuitively. Song arrangements also move from serene to intense and back again.

City Talks

Written By: Simon Shapiro

CITY TALKS (Simon Shapiro)

Every city has a voice
Can you hear between the noise?

Echo through the subway
Whisper on the platform
Rattle of the slow train

Ringing as the bell tolls
Buzzing of the cell phones
All whirling in my ears

This city talks, sometimes it sings
A song for every soul who’s ever lived within
This city talks, sometimes it screams
And this time is it making or is it breaking dreams?

Beeping of the blocked cars
Music from the street bars
All swirling in the air

Preaching from a soap box
Begging at the bus stops
I’m standing on the corner

This city talks, sometimes it sings
The joys of victory the sorrows of our sins
This city talks, sometimes it screams
This time is it making or is it breaking dreams?
Is it breaking dreams?

Every city has a voice
Is it laughing in your face?
Or crying in your ear
Can you hear between the noise?
The message is loud and clear

Every city has a voice
Can you hear between the noise

This city talks, sometimes it sings
The pleasure of love made the pain of lives unlived
This city talks, sometimes it screams
And this time is it making or is it breaking dreams?
Is it breaking dreams?

Echo through the subway
Whisper on the platform
Rattle of a slow train

What a Day

WHAT A DAY (Simon Shapiro)

What a day to make a thousand calls that get you nowhere
What a day to wait an hour for someone who’s not there
What a day to stand in line for tickets that are sold out
What a day to change your mind and tell me that you want out

What a lie, what a game
But you can’t lose if you don’t play
What a lie, what a day

What a day to walk the dog but find she ran away
What a day to lose your job and to get robbed on the way
What a day to miss the bus but catch a cold again
What a day to visit my best friend and find you’re with him

What a lie, what a game
But you can’t lose if you don’t play
What a lie…

What a day to finally come awake
And see the mess that you have made
A life you don’t want overtakes
As the world you thought you had just drifts away

Into a day where strong will break, the trapped escape, the dead will wake
Truth will fake, will pleasure ache, give will take, will steady shake?
Out of control, the blackest hole, an empty soul, I’m gonna go
To the abyss, the long cold kiss, ungranted wishes

What a lie, what a game
But you can’t lose if you don’t play
What a time, is there no way
That we can choose another way?
What a lie, what a day
Oh what a day

Knots untied and soul-divided
Lost in circles undecided
What a lie a game to play
There’s nothing more to say
But what a day

Lover of Life

Written By: Simon Shapiro

A long walk down the wrong track
I’ve been gone but now I’m back
And it feels so good to be here
I lay down in a strange bed
Ten years of my life just fled
Don’t even know what I was dreaming
But I won’t cry For what I’m leaving….leaving behind

Cos I’m a lover of life and I’m a liver of dreams
I’m a toucher of light and I’m a giver of things
I’m a breather of fire I’ll be the spreader of wings
Coz I’m a lover of life I’m a lover of life yeah

I’ve lived long in the wrong skin
I’ve held on to the strangest things
I’ll keep moving till I get there
A long drive in the wrong car
Before I knew it I’d gone too far
At least this road is headed somewhere

Now I don’t cry for what I am leaving…leaving behind

Cos I’m a lover of life and I’m a liver of dreams
I’m a toucher of light and I’m a giver of things
I’m a breather of fire I’ll be the spreader of wings
Coz I’m a lover of life I’m a lover of life

But I was lost inside a whole
Much deeper than I thought I could go
I was digging out, that’s when I found my gold

Do do do………….

I always fight for what I believe in
Yeah I know that’s right (I’m a lover of life)

Cos I’m a lover of life and I’m a liver of dreams
I’m a toucher of light and I’m a giver of things
I’m a breather of fire I’ll be the spreader of wings
Coz I’m a lover of life I’m a lover of life yeah

Do do do…………..

Anything to Anyone

Written By: Simon Shapiro

Anything to anyone (Simon Shapiro)

To all reluctant acrobats
Pushovers and front door mats
Searching for a way out of abuse
You wonder why you’re feeling used
You’d break your back before refuse

You’ve been exploited and exposed
You’ve changed the world but not your cloths
Now you really need somebody’s help
In trying to please everyone else
You saved the world but lost yourself

Now you’re not gonna be anything to anyone
While you’re still trying to be everything to everyone
Well I’m saying nothing new, but it’s not getting through… to you

The will to change will come along
When status quo is status wrong
I’m wondering will you drown or will you float
But you don’t wanna rock that boat
You’ll drift asea and stay afloat
You better rock the boat

Cos you’re not gonna be anything to anyone
While you’re still trying to be everything to everyone
Well I’m saying nothing new, but it’s not getting through… to you

The will to change will come along
When status quo is status wrong
Will you drown or will you float
Sink at sea or stay afloat

You’re not gonna be anything to anyone
You’re not gonna be, you’re not gonna be

You’re not gonna be anything to anyone
While you’re still trying to be everything to everyone
Well I’m saying nothing new, but it’s not getting through
I’m reaching out my hand, but it’s not reaching you
To make you understand, there’s nothing I can do

Band In The Corner

Written By: Simon Shapiro

Band in the corner

Got a little three-piece band
We call ‘the mellancholly’
We do Sting,‘The King’ and Carole King
But we don’t touch Buddy Holly
For three years every Sunday
Come rain or hail or shine
We come here, set up our gear
And play from five til nine

We’re the band in the corner
Playing to no one
We’re the band in the corner
We’ll be having fun
Getting paid for doing something
That we’d gladly do for free
We’re the band in the corner
Come on along and see

Otto on the guitar
He doesn’t like to sing
But he can play any song
I throw at him
8 am tomorrow
He’ll be back at work once more
Digging holes but Otto knows
He’s really living for

The band in the corner
Yeah we’ll play for anyone
We’re the band in the corner
We’ll be having fun
Getting paid for doing something
That we’d gladly do for free
We’re the band in the corner
Come on along and see

George behind the drum kit
Well he loves being here
He does it coz he loves it
And they offer us free beer
But sometimes when I look at him
He seems a world away
He’s dreaming of some big tour
He’ll be going on someday
With the band in the corner
Yeah we’ll play for everyone
We’ll be out of the corner
When our big break comes
You can see us on the big stage
In magazines on MTV
There’ll be lines round the corner
Just you wait and …

See, if you like the sound
Grab a drink and hang around
We might play your favourite song
Dance around and sing along

Still got a big dream
One day I’ll be a star
Everyone will love me
And I’ll walk into a bar
In the corner there’s a band
Playing a song I’ve heard before
It’s about being in the corner
But believing that you’re more

Than the band in the corner
Yeah we’ll play for anyone
We’re the band in the corner
We’re still having fun
Getting paid for doing something
That we’d gladly do for free
We’re the band in the corner
Come on and see

There’s a band in the corner
Yeah we’ll play for anyone
We’re the band in the corner
We’ll be having fun
If you don’t see us on the big stage
In magazines on MTV
Take a look in the corner
This is where we’ll be
We’ll be
Come on along and see yeah

Someone Else

Written By: Simon Shapiro

Someone else

Someone else, someone else
You want to be anybody but yourself

Do you want to cry like the angels cry
Do you want to die like the heroes die
Do you want to know what the prophet knows
Do you want to….

Go where lucky people go to places far from here
But you are stuck here on your own
Wishen you were….

Someone else, someone else
You want to be anybody but yourself
Someone else someone else
You got to be anybody but yourself

Do you want to speak like the wise one speaks?
Do you want to sleep like the righteous sleep?
Do you want to give like the good ones give?
Do you want to…..

Live like normal people live, it looks so nice and easy
You’d give everything you own for just one moment
Being….

Someone else, someone else
You want to be anybody but yourself
Someone else someone else
You got to be anybody but yourself

Someone else, someone else.. could be you my dear no less

Powerless, powerless, how does anybody live like this
Powerless, it’s a mess, how does anybody live like this…..like this

Someone else, someone else
You want to be anybody but yourself
Someone else someone else
You got to be anybody but yourself
Someone else, someone else
You got to be anybody but yourself

But there aint no one like yourself
