Bio
Simon Whelan was born in Dublin, Ireland but raised in Africa. His songs reflect the acoustic and folk influence of his Irish heritage but can't deny tipping their hat to the rhythms he heard growing up as a child in Africa.
On his return to Ireland in the late 80's Simon began to write songs and learn guitar culminating in the formation of Cisco an alternative rock band that enjoyed critical acclaim but not much else..
This incarnation was short lived as Simon soon returned to South Africa where he toured with folk trio Mud Kitchen for a year. This is where he learned the value of melody in song, Mud Kitchen had a focus on vocal harmony rather than instrumentation and would often blow their harder rocking rivals off the stage.
After touring in South Africa and a stint of busking in Paris Simon returned to Ireland to reform Cisco. Although they produced two great releases in conjunction with Paul Barrett of U2 fame, Cisco never enjoyed the market exposure they deserved and broke up in 2001.
Simon now devotes his time to songwriting and recording at his home studio in Co. Wicklow in Ireland. His goal is to write songs for a younger generation with a unique but difficult future to face.
