"Up & Coming"

Young Seattle trio Simple Monsters have only two songs available (both of which you can hear for free at www.simplemonsters .bandcamp.com), but each one is very different, revealing musicians who have only just begun to sort out which direction they want to go. The song "Evolution" is a little more aggressive than usual, experimenting with some Radiohead and Smashing Pumpkins influences—there's an inexplicable robot-voiced sample and some big Billy Corgan–esque guitar riffs. And "While" is more laid-back—maybe akin to Modest Mouse and Pavement (and I swear there's a Weezer-like guitar line in there somewhere). Simple Monsters are far from flawless, but they're every band I loved when I was a teenager, mashed together by a new generation of teenagers. Godspeed, gentlemen.

Bio

2011 is the year that Simple Monsters started recording music. Simple Monsters' first demo: "Big Monster" was recorded in March 2011. It was released later that month and had 2 tracks available. Those two tracks have led to Simple Monsters playing a few shows around the Seattle area including: The Vera Project, and The Crocodile. Plus a short blurb written about "Big Monster" in the Stranger. Now as Simple Monsters slow down on shows for the summer of 2011 they are heading back into Studio to record 4 new songs. These songs will be released later in 2011 and available for pre-order on Bandcamp in late July.

Edward Cunningham started a band in 2008 called Writers Block. Writers Block had many members including drummer for Simple Monsters: Matthew Jensen. Writers Block eventually disbanded in April 2010. Shortly afterwards Edward talked to Matt and created Simple Monsters. Simple Monsters has had 6 different members in its 4 month streak. Now as Simple Monsters are finally finding their own sound they have narrowed down to 3 members: Edward Cunningham, Matthew Jensen, and Lowell Horvitz.

The bands name is taken from a lyric by local band: Shotty. The lead singer for Shotty: Pat Moon produced Simple Monsters first 2 song demo.
