"Single File to Freedom's Debut Album Showcases a Unique Sound"

Music Review: Stomping Your Trend - Single File to Freedom's Debut Album Showcases a Unique Sound

Unique. That’s probably the best way to describe Single File to Freedom; the latest local band trying to break into the Toronto metal scene. Over the past year this five men band from various parts of Ontario has been making waves in the big city. With their fresh fusion of punk, metal, and funk their new album is a godsend for those of us looking for some authentic, good quality new music.

Single File to Freedom (SFTF) started when the two founding members and long time friends Mark Howard and Emerson Pringle moved to Toronto from the small town of Picton, Ontario. In their small apartment above an insurance company on the east end, they started writing guitar and drum parts. Eventually, they met bassist Ryan Cox and recruited their guitar virtuoso friend Wayne Plumpton to form Single File to Freedom. After the first few dreary months sans vocals, Ryan invited his friend Chad Kerswill to try a hand at singing. Originally not a singer, he passed the test with his powerful voice and was quickly adopted into the Single File to Freedom family.

Soon enough Single File to Freedom started pouring out songs and creating musical madness. The band’s unique sound stems from their diverse background of influences and talents. All members of the band were musicians prior to SFTF and together they bring out a mesh of punk, metal, and funk that electrifies their appropriately named debut E.P., Stomping Your Trend.

The album was recorded at Jungle Funk Productions, the new studio of Single File to Freedom drummer Emerson Pringle. With the help of his studio partner Chris Sampson, the five ferocious tracks on Stomping Your Trend were recorded in a few short days with all the instruments live off the floor to give it an authentic feel that reverberates through the whole E.P.

That feeling is most obvious on the track Sink or Swim. It pushes against you from start to finish, invigorating the raging protesting voice within even the most reserved appreciator of music. “I like Sink or Swim the most because it’s the most creative. The rhythm guitar line and the bass line meld together to form one single melody during the chorus,” states guitarist Mark Howard.

The album certainly has its share of catchy melody, shredding guitar rhythms, and fervent screaming. It stands as a testament to the fact that these guys know how to harness music to its full potential. Lately they’ve been playing locally at venues like Rancho Relaxo, The Horseshoe, The Blue Moon, and the Metal Bar. “They always bring a great crowd out to the shows,” says Damien Nelson, who organizes many of their concerts. “It is so refreshing to see a band on the scene who does it for the love of music, [and] not to perpetuate a trend.”

If you want to check out Single File to Freedom, they have a list of shows on myspace at www.myspace.com/singlefiletofreedom. As in the spirit of true punk rock, their album is for sale at all their shows along with other handmade, original merchandise. - The Buzz - Seneca Student Newspaper

Bio

Spawned from the metal/funk fusion of founding members Emerson Pringle (drums) and Mark Howard (rhythm guitars) SingleFileToFreedom started to take its shape in early 2005. In the beginning the rhythms were catchy and full of pure energy. In early 2006, after moving from small town Ontario to Toronto to pursue his musical interests, Wayne Plumton (lead guitars) came into his role as the melody of SFTF. Wayne was quickly thrown into the mix with no forewarning of what was expected of him. He was the missing link bridging the gap between Emerson and Mark. Songs began writing themselves. In Febuary of 2006, Ryan Cox was introduced to Mark as a punk rock guitar player and a part time bass player. Cox filled his role like a piece in a jigsaw puzzle. With the knowledge of punk rock and an overall will to rock the fuck out, Ryan is the crushing bottom end of SFTF. After the fall out of our first singer, a friend and neighbor of Cox came along; Chad Kurse. Chad, being a well rounded musician himself, but never a front man, filled his role 10 fold. In only a matter of weeks the foundation of SFTF was built. Now refined, driven and very motivated, SingleFileToFreedom is here to deliver the message to our people. We fight for freedom, we despise the system and we are not afraid. Treading the path to freedom and silencing all that oppose, we are SingleFileToFreedom............
