SIREN JUNKIES (formerly SONIC)

SIREN JUNKIES (formerly SONIC) were fantastic to work with and we were thrilled and privileged to have them in our line-up (2 venues, 20 acts). As far as musical talent is concerned they definitely have the wow, x-factor that is hard to explain but keeps you wanting more. The lead singer has considerable vocal talent and she has the persona and stage presence to more than successfully carry a rock band, she rocks the stage!

It’s obvious to even the musically unenlightened that these guys have been playing together for awhile, the synergy and musical communication is tight, not missing a beat anywhere. They have an array of quality rock with plenty of grit (without any lollipop factor) is one way I’d describe them.

They were without a doubt the stand out performance of the night.

Musical talents aside, Amos and the crew are really great people. This carries through in their music also (maybe that is the x-factor). Despite being one of the more high profile bands at our event, they were helpful, friendly, supportive and down to earth towards other musicians, the sound and lighting technicians and the co-ordinators. I’m personally on their mailing list now and am eager to catch them at their next gig, as are many of the Field Creative team. They will be first on our list to call for our next festival. I would gladly recommend them to any other events organizer.

"Homebake"

Blonde
4 stars

The debut release from the Auckland rock/pop four-piece, this was produced at the Rock Factory and contains some of the catchiest, hook-filled songs you will hear all year. Not only are they catchy, they are also beautifully delivered by vocalist Nikki Hartnett-Clarke, whose warm rich voice helps set the band apart. Imagine Stellar, but with a coating of sweet sugary pop hooks that make for highly addictive listening, especially tracks such as Elevator and Sensible. You may have seen the videos for Sensible and The Gift.

Blonde
4 stars

This Auckland 4-piece is definitely going somewhere. Blonde is SIREN JUNKIES (formerly SONIC) debut EP and if you’re after catchy rock/pop songs, this is what you need. All four tracks on the EP are delivered by a very talented vocalist – Nikki Hartnett-Clarke, who has a warm, full voice, which carries the vocals. The tracks include Elevator, which has a video release expected soon, and is a very attractive and catchy song. Talk to Me which is much more easy listening, The Gift which is my personal favourite, with its tuneful beat and smooth flow, and Sensible which is more of an up tempo one, but still remaining a catchy rock/pop tune.

All in all, this is a very good release, and if you’ve ever met them, they are a really nice bunch of people and will always find time to chat. You may have noticed them playing at the start of the year at the Orientation gigs, but also around the Auckland music scene. Check out their website for all their gigs and appearances. Definitely worth a listen and worth checking out. Very good live as I’ve had the privilege of playing before them.

Bio

Siren Junkies is an Auckland based 4 piece band playing their own original rock/pop music style, and was formed in February 2004. Their music has been described as melodic, dynamic and edgy and they have supported some of New Zealand's big acts, such as Goodshirt, Goldenhorse, Anika Moa, Breaks Co-Op and The Rabble.

The band is regularly seeking opportunities to perform at international festivals and events, while maintaining a strong focus on the local market by receiving radio and television coverage for their singles and music videos, supported by regular local performances.

Siren Junkies was selected to play at NXNE, which is Canada's largest and most prestigious music festival in Toronto in June 2006. It was the only New Zealand act playing at this festival. Leading Canadian Music Source, Chart Attack was quoted as saying "A whole lot of attitude and a good amount of sex appeal from lead singer Nikki Hartnett-Clarke bodes well down the road for the Siren Junkies. It's this combination of look and attitude that could take them a ways".

Siren Junkie's live performance is professional, energetic and impressive. Lead singer Nikki Hartnett-Clarke, has wowed audiences with her vocal talents and she has been highly praised by all of those who have reviewed their debut EP 'Blonde', released in 2005.

The band now has national distribution for its EP Blonde, through Global Routes, in conjunction with Powertool Records. Their song Elevator was selected in 2005, as one of the finalists for the DB Export Gold Ignition competition.

Siren Junkies have released 3 self-funded music videos; the first in 2004 (Sensible) is still receiving television airplay. Their latest music video, Elevator (released April 2006), is receiving air play on C4, XSTV, Coast TV and ALT TV. Siren Junkies currently has had airplay on Kiwi Fm, National Radio, bFM, The Generator, and Valdus Radio for a range of tracks from their EP Blonde.

Siren Junkies have also had National television exposure - appearing on C4, XSTV, Alt TV and Coast.

Siren Junkies has received great press, in North & South Magazine, In Unison Magazine, Rip it Up (May 2005), Reaktor Magazine, Tearaway Magazine. Rip it Up Magazine (April/May 2005) reviewed Blonde and were quoted as saying "some of the catchiest, hook-filled songs you will hear all year".

The group is currently working on their debut album, with an expected release date of February 2008.

Note: Siren Junkies was originally formed under the name Sonic. After deliberating on a name change for almost a year, the band decided on the change prior to their June 2006 performance at NXNE in Canada.
