Bio
Sirens Big Band are Sydney's only all-female large ensemble. Growing from the genre of female big band that reached its peak from the 1920s to 50s, Sirens Big Band revitalise the big band genre creating energetic, danceable music that mixes jazz with reggae, ska, Afro-Cuban and Latin beats.
The Sirens’ sound comes from a repertoire gathered from global inspiration & local roots with original compositions plus arrangements of tunes by the likes of Mulatu Astatke, The Vampires, Judy Bailey and Nomo. Their music has a strong focus on improvisation and the band features a long list of outstanding soloists and the amazing vocalist Crystal Barecca.
Despite only having formed in early 2010 the band have already played sell-out shows around Sydney, made an appearance at the Brisbane Festival, recorded live with the ABC and have some upcoming shows at Sydney Festival 2011.
