Bio

Born and bred in the downtown scene of New York City, the Sirius Quartet blends the precision of classical music with the raw energy of a rock band. The four conservatory-trained musicians are also highly skilled improvisers, and whether playing acoustic or electric, they push beyond the conventional sonic vocabulary associated with string instruments. From Lincoln Center and the Köln Triennale to the Knitting Factory and CBGB’s, Sirius have taken their genre-bending music to halls and clubs across the globe.

For over a decade the Sirius Quartet has championed innovative music. Pushing beyond the classical repertoire, these four improvisers and composers explore the grey area between contemporary classical, jazz, avant-garde, rock, metal, and world music, melting it all together and challenging conventional ideas of what a string quartet is capable of.

Sirius have played shows at Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall, Merkin Hall, the LA County Museum, the American Composers Alliance Music Festival, the Gershwin Hotel, the Andy Warhol Museum, the Knitting Factory, CBGB’s, the Stone, the Issue Project Room, and the Kitchen, among others. In Europe, they joined John Zorn in performances at Köln’s Musik Triennale, and performed with Nick Didkovsky and Dr. Nerve at festivals in Moers, Germany; Nancy, France; and Victoriaville, Canada. The past year has seen the quartet playing jazz festivals in Germany, Taiwan, China, and Malaysia.

As freelance/session musicians in the NYC area, members of the quartet have also performed alongside Lady Gaga, Sting, Metallica, Peter Gabriel, Elton John, Quincy Jones, Mary J. Blige, Bobby McFerrin, Tony Bennett, and Debby Harry.
