"A piece of paper strikes inspiration"

On Thursday, Nov. 17 marketing Hoyt Yeatman’s band, Sitting On Stacy, was asked to leave the stage during the Open Mic Night competition in the Lee and Frank Goldberg Courtyard for being too loud.
Regardless, Sitting On Stacy ended up winning the competition.
“We try to make our shows really entertaining and we do crazy things on stage,” Yeatman said. “We just push it to the max before we get kicked out of the venue.”
Sitting On Stacy was formed in lead singer and guitarist Yeatman’s native Ventura County along with drummer Jeff Demorest and bassist Kyle Hart and has been active for a year and a half. They used to be called Paper.
Yeatman cites Sublime, Nirvana, Green Day and Weezer as influences, and describes Sitting On Stacy's genre as consisting of rock, ska and grunge elements.
In addition to being lead singer and guitarist, Yeatman also serves as Sitting On Stacy's primary songwriter.
He said his inspirations range from day to day experiences to the confusions of relationships and adolescence.
“Most of my songs are about girls,” he said. “But they’re also about anything I’m feeling at the time. There’s one song I wrote when I was super sick, I had the flu, and I wrote about that experience. I try to play on emotions everyone feels, or can at least relate to.”
Yeatman said he believes the relatability of Sitting On Stacy's songs causes the lyrics to stick with listeners, leading to them singing along at live shows.
“People know the songs and will be singing along (at shows),” he said. “I’ve never experienced that. It’s like something you created and can share with people and they enjoy it.”
Yeatman values writing catchy, fun songs just as much as meaningful ones.
“(I hope to write) earworm songs that also make people think about what they’re hearing with the lyrics,” he said.
Sitting On Stacy has acquired a significant online following, with their Instagram account currently standing at 4,673 followers and their most played track, “Seashells,” having 2,274 listens on SoundCloud, their other tracks trailing close behind.
However, Yeatman credits San Diego’s music scene, word of mouth and Paper’s consistent live performances for their growing fanbase.
“Everyone (in San Diego) is really into music and bands flourish here,” he said.
Sitting On Stacy has also achieved recognition and established connections with big names in its genre.
It recently won a Battle of the Bands competition in Los Angeles that was judged by Shavo Odadjian, bassist of System of a Down.
On Dec. 17 Sitting On Stacy will open for Smash Mouth at the Canyon Club in Agoura Hills.
“A lot of our fans really get into (our shows),” Yeatman said. “If you like jumping around and fun music you should come to a show.”
“Sitting On Stacy always make the most of its time on stage and always have fun with it,” recording technology and sound design sophomore Domonique Crumpton said. “Their music is very fun, upbeat and in your face. It’s hard not to dance around a bit when you’re in the crowd watching them perform.”
Yeatman understands the fierce competition of the music industry, but still has high hopes for Sitting On Stacy.
“I don’t want to sound like every other band but I want to make it (in music),” he said. “I think we can, I just have to keep making songs and getting them out there. But I definitely want to have a career in this.”
Along with SoundCloud, Sitting On Stacy currently has music up on iTunes and fans can expect its debut full-length album, “Obsessed,” to be released soon after Christmas. - Julianna Ress

Sitting On Stacy

Bio:

Formerly Paper, Sitting on Stacy, is a Southern California based punk/alternative band that formed in 2014. The band consists of original members Hoyt Yeatman, Jeff Demorest and Kyle Hart. Sitting on Stacy has performed at numerous venues in the Ventura County, Los Angeles, and San Diego areas, including:

  • LA House of Blues
  • The Canyon Club
  • Chain Reaction
  • The Irenic
  • The Vortex
  • The Mint
  • Timewarp Records

Their full length album entitled Obsessed, is a blend of punk and alternative rock with enough production to pass as pop. Sitting on Stacy is known for their high-energy performances.

Where it all began:

Hoyt, Jeff, and Kyle all attended a local performance based rock music school together. Each wanted music in their futures.  Hoyt saw Jeff’s energetic performance (in a dress and lipstick) and knew their senses of humor meshed.  He asked Jeff to jam and they shortly afterward formed Paper. Kyle’s skill and sense of humor made him a natural choice when choosing a bassist. As Paper, they had success winning numerous Battle of the Band competitions, performing locally and opening for Puddle of Mudd, Unwritten Law, and Smash Mouth. Hoyt literally one night dreamed their name was Sitting On Stacy and what started as a funny dream has stuck. They Changed their name to Sitting On Stacy and recorded their first full length album titled Obsessed that is now on Itunes, Spotify, Amazon Music, etc.

Where they are now:

Sitting on Stacy resides in the San Diego and the greater Los Angeles areas. Hoyt Yeatman
currently is studying Business Administration/Psychology of Marketing at San
Diego State University, while Jeff Demorest and Kyle Hart are attending
community college and preparing to transfer. Their album Obsessed was released April 1st,
2017.
