"SIVLE - Brantford Expositor"

Five local bands will be performing on the side stage at WTFest on Saturday at Brantford’s Lions Park.

SIVLE (Elvis spelled backwards) comprises Joan Minnery, her son, Bill, brother Bob and Brad Bridges. Performing together on stage for the first time, they will debut their new single, What Would Walter Do. The song is an homage to the game of hockey, and Canada’s greatest hockey dad, Walter Gretzky.

Playing all original progressive rock and rock-pop material, SIVLE also will debut their pop rock anthem, Whatever It Takes.

“We’re pulling out all the stops to make it a 20-minute show that won’t be forgotten,” Joan Minnery says. “We are honoured and gobsmacked to play at WTFest.”

The other local bands performing on the side stage at WTFest are Ruby’s Revenge, Fool’s Union, Moonlight Desires and the Good Goddamns.

The Sheepdogs are headliners for the fourth edition of the outdoor music festival. Also performing will be USS, The Beaches, Bonds of Mara and the Ascot Royals. - Brantford Expositor

"Gold Box Christmas Concert For The Homeless"

A Brantford musician hopes to deliver some Christmas cheer to the city’s homeless.

Joan Minnery has organized a Dec. 20 Christmas concert at the Sanderson Centre to help raise money for and lift the spirits of those who are living outdoors. The concert starts at 7 p.m.

Minnery credits her brother, Bob Minnery, with the idea.

“He saw an article in The Expositor about the tent city and said that we should do something to help,” she said.

“We made a few phone calls, lined up some bands that we’ve worked with in the past and spoke to the Sanderson Centre and it all came together pretty quickly.”

Minnery and her brother are members of the band Sivle — Elvis spelled backward — along with Dan Taylor and Joan’s son, Bill.

In addition to Sivle, the lineup for the concert includes Trysted Sister, Brantford’s Kristen Bezemer, who performs as Innersha, and Sarah Smith, as well as an appearance by Maura Edmunds and students from Starr Sensations, Minnery’s vocal school.

“We’re really pleased with our lineup,” said Minnery, noting that Smith has just returned from a tour of Europe.

“Sarah is an Ontario rock superstar.”

Smith is from London, Ont., and, according to her website, plays 300 dates a year in Canada, the United States and Europe. She has shared the stage with Carole Pope, Sass Jordan, Biff Naked, David Wilcox and 54-40. Her social activism includes playing shows in support of the Canadian Mental Health Association and Addictions Services of Thames Valley.

All of the entertainers are donating their time for the concert, which Minnery said she hopes will raise at least $1,000.

People attending the concert will be asked to make a cash donation at the door. The money raised will be turned over to the Brantford Guardian Angels, a local group that provides assistance to those in local encampments.

Led by Tracey Bucci, the Guardian Angels have delivered water, tents, sleeping bags, blankets and tarps, among other items, to the residents of Welcome Love Camp, a tent city near Shallow Creek Park.

“Everyone deserves a Christmas miracle and we’re hoping to deliver some good cheer to those who could use a boost,” Minnery said.

Organizers are looking for sponsors to help cover the operating costs of performing at the Sanderson Centre. Anyone interested in sponsoring the event can call Minnery at 519-771-5687 or e-mail her at joanminnery@gmail.com .

"SIVLE on Blog Hoarder"

Shedding the skin of a cover band and showing their true colours, Sivle (Elvis spelled backward) from Brantford, Ontario is coming into their own while pushing the limits of indie rock.

The vocal powerhouse Joan Minnery has the cadence and range of a Florence Welch of Florence + The Machine while keeping a style all her own. Her voice sounds like it was birthed on a Broadway stage there is such a theatrical beauty to it, yet there is an unmistakable rock element that adds the knife sharp edge to the arrangement.

The strange beauty in this band comes from the versatility of each member making their true direction hard to pin point, which is one of the most exciting aspects to this group.

I can hear the ticking of the time bomb that is about to blast Sivle over the radio waves and anyone in the blast radius will have an earful of inspirational rock.

Sivle is an indie/soft rock band with a rock n roll element that is shown when they blow the doors off classic rock songs like “Rocky Mountain Way” or perform hard hitting originals like “Throw Down Those Stones,” a song about the rising violence in their own city and abroad making it the best introduction to what this band is. The song combats the worlds negativity with a message of love and unity, bringing with it a rhythm that sounds like it was conjured up by the spirits in the dark depths of a far off jungle.

The song starts with Bill Minnery making Van Halen eat their heart out as he shows exactly what he’s capable of on guitar while drummer Dan Taylor enters like a wave that gradually climbs to the size of a tower, swelling over and crashing on the entire beach full of spectators.

Lyrics like “Love is immaculate, it rises it falls, it lives, life is life only, a moment a treasure, a gift,” shows off not just the lyrical prowess of the group but the overall message they are trying to put out which is that love is the answer.

This band is a spider that dips each of its legs into a sound and then spins them all together in a unique and gripping web that you don’t want to escape from.

You can hear the old style rock n roll influence in songs like “Dancing with Tom Petty,” and “What would Walter do?” a song about hockey’s greatest dad, Walter Gretzky, yet the whole time the indie sound and inspirational lyrics are present causing a real relevance to their work.

I had the opportunity to ask singer Joan Minnery some questions about Sivle and their direction.

You started as a cover band and are now spreading your wings making your own music. When will the first album be released?

We started out as a cover band, this was supposed to be how it was to go but we received an opportunity to play WTFest 2019 and it had to be all original music or we couldn't get the gig. We won the spot out of 450 bands but they wanted originals and we had none.

Enter my brother Bob who had just written a song for Walter Gretzky and then we all got together and wrote “Whatever It Takes.”

We were hoping for a full album this June, and that was the plan but with what's happening (Covid 19) we're on hiatus as we can't get together. We're now looking at more Christmas 2020, which will be nice, because we'll put our Christmas songs on that album too.

When did music enter your families life?

I personally began singing when I was a young gal but as a band, we got together in September 2017. It was for a huge event I was producing based upon my book “Walking My Way Back To Me.” We were culminating the story in musical form. From there, the young lads asked to keep the band going. Bill has been playing since he was 12, Dan has played his entire life as has Bob.

If you couldn’t use the words love, peace, or inspirational how would you define your music in one word?

Victorious. Positive Reinforcement. Motivational.

Your band has an original sound that filters out your influences, your covers even have your own flair to them, how do you achieve this?

That's kinda my doing. I am very musical theatre and over the top and it's more colourful to sing a song Vaudeville than just straight forward. I've got chops and I use them. The vast age gap and the obvious Van Halen/Metallica backup influence meets the Broadway Country Elvis loving front person --- fuses together to create something recognizable yet totally ours. We add our own flair as we allow each of us to excel and contribute. We foster the individuality of one another and complement each other.

What is your favourite song from your set list?

My personal favourite from our Covers is “Creep” and I am sure the band all agree on that. As for the Originals, as much as we love “Throw Down Those Stones” we're all still akin and in love with “Whatever It Takes.”

Do you plan on eliminating covers from your set list and perform only originals or will there always be a blast to the past element with a Sivle show?

We're always going to do a Blast from the Past, that's our forte, our niche, our identity and let's face it, they don't sound like anyone else's. But we'd be totally down to do a full original set.

Your band name is Elvis spelled backward, is he your biggest influence?

Elvis, Elvis,Elvis....3 floors of memorabilia in the house. We ran the second largest Elvis Festival in Canada and we toured in several Elvis tribute bands....Yes he's the biggest influence for me. Bob is Bob Dylan, Bill is Van Halen, Dan is Fleetwood Mac.

How important is Canada to your music?

Canada is home, it’s everything. It is the essence of our nucleus. The pride of the Maple Leaf. There is no Sivle without Canada.

What is next for Sivle?

More originals, getting our album out, hopefully getting some songs put to actual videos and we'd love to write an all original musical based upon our songs.

Bio

SIVLE (Elvis spelled backwards) is a versatile Indie & Pop-Rock band from Brantford Ontario Canada belting out our own original songs as well as an arsenal of legendary tunes from the 50s – today. SIVLE is fronted by Joan Minnery on Lead Vocals, Bill Minnery on Guitar/Bass/Vocals, Dan Taylor on Drums/Keys/Backup Vocals and Bob Minnery aka bigEZbob on Rhythm Guitar.

We are overwhelmingly gobsmacked with the release of our three singles "Whatever It Takes," "What Would Walter Do," and "Throw Down Those Stones" and the ROCKtastic buzz they are creating on Indie Radio. We are currently in rotation on stations in Germany, the U.K., Europe, Australia, the U.S., and Canada. We released our tunes in August 2019 and February 2020 and holy frijoles what a fire storm! All songs are now available on iTunes, Spotify and many other music platforms. We never saw this coming as we used to be just a 'cover' band. This all stemmed from us being selected out of over 450 bands to play the 2019 WTFest Rock Festival, one of Ontario's Largest Music Festivals. We garnered one of 5 spots on July 27th, 2019 and became the opening act. The rest as they say is HERstory!!!

A SIVLE show consists of our original songs and legendary hits from a ELVIS, Beatles, CCR, Janis, CCR, as well as more recent hits rounding out the showcase. There is something for everyone and we love to see people dancing. Our fellas are very influenced by Van Halen/Metallica so there's always an edge to everything we do. We are very well known for adding our own unique spin --- the songs become SIVLEized!

SIVLE formed in 2017 and since that time we have had the opportunity to be the producers of the 2019 Gold Box Music Fest at the Sanderson Centre for the Performing Arts. We were the featured entertainment at the 2019 Mayor's Levee. We headlined both the 2018 'FIND YOUR SPIRIT FEST’ and the 2018 'Downtown Music Fest' in Brantford. We have packed rooms at the Sanderson Centre, Corktown Pub, Delhi Harvest Fest, Jeffery’s Lounge, S.O.S. Club, Manny’s Place, Branch 90 Legion, Tansley's, Upper Thames Brewery, the Norfolk County Fair, the Polish Hall, Frankies Hometown Tavern, the St. George Legion, the Honest Lawyer, the Dairy Capital Cheese Festival, the Norwich Museum and have a heated schedule at a variety of festivals, fairs and local establishments.

SIVLE members are proud to be members of SOCAN and are registered members of the International Singer-Songwriters Association. SIVLE is a refreshingly youthful band combining two generations of musicians while bridging the age gap through likable tunes and interactive dynamic stage showmanship.

We have a very loyal following which we call our SIVLEization!!!
Are YOU Ready To Be SIVLEized?!

Fan Quotes:

"As always -- SIVLE is a must see live! You can't see the energy this band gives off until you see them live. They connect with their fans and our energy feeds their energy. If you only see their show once, you have to return to a number of shows to witness the change from show to show, it’s an absolute delight! While contemplating SIVLE, I couldn’t help but think of the Grateful Dead who were one of the early pioneers of direct relationships with their live show fans and renown for fusing many different styles together. SIVLE is the Grateful ALIVE.” ~ Ken Shipman, Brantford ON

“The standard of musicianship was fantastic, unleashing their full charge of extraordinary talent. Their fiery performance hit the audience roaring with committed versions of songs people wanted to hear. Transformed in time, this band captivated the swaying crowd with their exuberant enthusiasm, explosive energy & vocals that propelled the show to epic levels." ~ Anna Fornella, Brantford ON
