Ahh … the perfect encore to an incredibly solid reggae weekend. Much like JBB, 6th Degree drags the island-roots mentality through a slew of clawing forces and soulful matrices. After taking a spin with 6th Degree you’ll realize that George Clinton and Bob Marley had more in common than you think (besides a love for the grass, I mean). This band hones it all in the way the best reggae-tinted acts do it: It layers the underbelly with a thick, savory groove and wipes snare hits with bouts of reverb. Lead man Ryan Nava fronts it all with locomotive flow, but can ease up when the vibe calls for relaxing air. Sum it all up, and you’re guaranteed a fun time. And the Berklee-bred crew knows how to buckle down and work: This show celebrates the release of not one, but two albums. Experimenting mostly in Dub/Reggae, Hip-Hop, Afro-Beat and various world musics, SixthDegree show's feature constantly evolving instrumentation and guest musicians as well as fierce improvisation and exceptional performance. All music is centered around the idea of simple, hypnotic grooves meant to free the mind and let loose our troubles in the world.
SixthDegree has released two independent studio albums entitled "Initial Transmission" and "Trapelo Sessions". Both albums are a mixed bag of genres and all original material featuring various guest musicians with world-class playing.
In a world filled with plugins, digital instruments and auto-tune, these albums were dedicated to capturing the sounds of real people playing through real analog instruments and presenting the true performances of those players.
SixthDegree's music balances between respect and dedication to traditional roots musics and pushing the bounds of exploration and experimentation in new styles. The goal of this tribe is to continue constantly playing out live wherever we are welcome and composing/recording new music for your minds and bodies to groove to.
