"OrlandoBands.com Interview W/ Otis Lee"

OB.com: What got this band rolling? How did Six Times Losers start?

Otis Lee: It's actually been a pretty long process. We first started working on this concept about 5 years ago, and we've just started playing shows in the last year. The Kid and I have been in a lot of different bands over the years, playing all kinds of music. Six Time Losers is all about getting back to our roots and playing the music we grew up on. We don't exactly like the direction the country industry has been heading. So, we decided to show people what real country music sounds like. The original idea was for it to be a duo, and we'd just hire studio musicians for the record, and a back up band to play live. When we went to record we got one of our best friends, Randy Coole, a drummer we've both been working with for years, to come on board. And we were lucky enough to get Ken Franzetta to play steel guitar and organ on the project. Kyle came on later. He's actually the drummer in A Palace in Persia, an excellent progressive rock jazz fusion band. We convinced him that he knew how to play the organ, and he's been playing with us ever since. Everybody got along so well, and our sound became so developed, that we just kind became a band without even planning to.

OB.com: What does the name mean?

Otis Lee: It's a Dylan lyric. From Subterranean Homesick Blues. We're both huge Bob Dylan fans, and when it came time to settle on a band name, it only seemed right to pay tribute to one of our biggest musical influences.

OB.com: Why all the drinking songs?

Otis Lee: Well man, that one's pretty simple. All of the best writers in the world say "write what you know". And believe me when i say... we know drinking.

OB.com: How do you view the Orlando/Central Florida music scene? What music is doing well, what music isn't doing well? What could the Central Florida scene do to bring more attention to Florida bands?

Otis Lee: The problem with the Central Florida music scene is that there isn't one. All of the genres try to create their own, and that just drives a wedge in the community. Every now and then you get a band that blows up out of Orlando. But, after they've made it, it seems like you never here anything about where they're from. And they rarely play local shows until after they're washed up and can't get a show anywhere else. We are all about good music. It doesn't matter what you play. Bands just need to have some pride in what they do and where they come from instead of doing whatever the machine wants them to do to succeed. It's great to see something like OrlandoBands.com starting to take off. At least somebody's trying. You know?

OB.com: What memorable moments do you have from your shows?

Otis Lee: Hell man, you've seen the way we drink. To be honest, I don't remember much about any of our shows.

OB.com: What do fans of Six Time Losers have to look forward to?

Otis Lee: Well, we're gunna be taking a bit of a break until the end of the summer, because I'll be spending it in Europe. But as soon as I get back, we'll be hitting it hard. Playing as many shows as possible, and most likely looking to record another album towards the end of the year. Most of the material is already written.

OB.com: Final thoughts?

Otis Lee: Just some shameless plugs. Check us out on myspace at www.myspace.com/6timelosers. You can listen to almost our entire album on there. We also have five songs on New Music 2.0, an internet radio station. If you check out our artist page in the country section, they are available for on demand streaming and free download. You can get all of the information in the recent blogs on our myspace page. - www.orlandobands.com

Bio

Six Time Losers are a country band based out of Orlando, Florida. The music they play may be a bit different from what you hear on most country radio stations these days. Call it alt-country, americana, or anything else you'd like. It's still undeniably, country. The band features two guitars, bass, and drums. With accompaniment including steel guitar, harmonica, and organ. The core of the band has been playing together for over 10 years, but have been playing around Florida as Six Time Losers since 2009. Over the last year, they've been stepping up the number of shows and fans, playing all over the Southeast with acts like: Gary Allan, David Allan Coe, Langhorne Slim, American Aquarium, and many more. They are currently recording their second full-length album, shooting for a release in early to mid 2013. In the meantime, do yourself a favor, and catch them live on stage. That's where they're most at home.
