SKAFYAH,
According to kabalistic writings the purpose of man on this earth, is to make a dwelling place for G-D here on earth. The term DWELLING is used because this connotes complete revelation, as one who is at home is in a mode of complete comfort and revelation, as opposed to when one is on the street outside his home. This is accomplished by man’s daily struggle of doing good deeds, and refraining from evil ones.
SKAFYAH represents this daily struggle, fought in trenches of every day life. The word Skafyah in Aramaic (the language of the Zohar, the book of Kaballa) means to subdue for one has subdue their inherent desire to do wrong, and refrain for right.
It is also written in Tanya (the book of intermediates) that the very act of Skafyah, the struggle of every man, is of extreme value to G-D, Even if you fail to conquer the darkness entirely, even if you are still rolling in the mud with the enemy -you can still find G-d in the struggle itself.
G-D promised that a time will come there will be no more darkness and concealment, and the whole earth will be filled with his light, it is then that we really recognize the great value found in man’s daily fight. This will happen with the coming of Moshiach may it happen today.
