We visited the (quite amazing) debut EP from Skeletal System earlier this year and went on to stick it in our inaugural Altered Zones post. Something about the best EP of the first six months of the year. So, we’re pretty psyched here in the impenetrable towers of 20JFG to hear their follow up single Small Talk. The band are once again putting it out for free through Bandcamp meaning their 2010 discography is looking pretty unfuckwithable right now. If 20JFG has one Christmas wish it is that some kind soul presses these records on vinyl and delivers them to our many tentacled stocking pinned hopefully to our cyclopean obelisk.

Once again channelling the ghost of Galaxy 500, Static Eyes brings the melancholy guitar and up tempo if definitely downbeat synth flourishes. Flashes of shoegaze and its post-rock descendants, moments of OMD synthpop and minimal computer music span decades to create a haunting, fin de siecle beauty. - 20 Jazz Funk Greats

Skeletal System have been getting a bit of blog notice at the moment, they were just on Altered Zones. An unsigned duo from San Francisco they make a night time chillwave sound, if Neon Indian and Washed out are all about summer sun and blissed out nostalgia then Skeletal System soundtrack that point at 3am on a hot July night when the trip is really kicking in and you're staring at a bunch of tree roots trying to get them to stop talking.
Its a little bit cold wave at points and a bit like the really slow tracks from Joy Divisions Unkown Pleasures album, very nice.

Skeletal System is the duo of Andy and Brian from San Francisco. Both share vocal duties while Andy's work consists mostly of generating the dark electronic sound that is fused with the shoegaze performed by Brian. In January 2010 the band released an excellent darkwave 5 track EP which can be found here as a free digital download. According to Andy, the band are to hit the studio to record a 7'' single that will hopefully be spinning on turntables soon. - See the Leaves

It's strange to think of something arriving, without warning, quite as perfectly formed as this. No label involvement, no svengali. A 5-track EP sitting there, for the world to download, perfectly judged artwork and all.

"Dialogue" is the hook, sounding like Galaxie 500 reformed and signed to Hyperdub. The other delights on the self-titled EP reveal themselves more slowly, like a cold fog engulfing the wharfs of the band's San Francisco home. Primitive cold-wave tendrils arch their way through the mournful post-punk guitar and dream-pop vocals, giving them an electronic base from which to launch evocations of post-millennial dub and echoing house. - Altered Zones / 20 Jazz Funk Greats

Man, I’m kind of embarrassed it’s taken me this long to get around to giving the brilliant San Fran based duo Skeletal System some love. Now I’m not the first to give them some love, but I definitely feel it necessary. Half of the duo, Andy, reached out to me a week or so ago and sent me over thier new self-titled EP which you can go get fo FREE at their bandcamp.

So far, the track above “Old Oceans” is just about my favorite so far. But , the five tracks act as one cohesive dark yet soft electronic journey. I really am digging what their putting out, and from what Andy tells me they are planning on getting down to the SoCal/LA area sometime in June/July. That watery 2-step seems destined to traverse the seas escaping from British borders and washing up (once again) on the shores of San Francisco. Skeletal System’s self-titled EP is a delicate mixture of Cold Wave delights but the second track, Dialogue, is the one that manages to marry the worlds of Cold Wave and that low key 2-step that seems poised, finally, in 2010, to engulf us all.

This is the inversion of diva-house. The mournful vocal here not neatly disguised within the confines of uplifting chords and surging drum machines. Here everything is naked, and cold. Even the breakdown, marshalling the House music tropes of stripped back drums, slowly introduced synth melody and ADD snares is wilfully understated and bizarrely graceful. As nighttime draws in and dew begins to assemble clandestinely, the blog becomes animated. Walking and counting each step simultaneously because you can, the sole audible sounds are the electrical hum of power cables and the groggy engine of a distant supply truck somewhere. An irrefutable purple drapes the far end of the April skies in anticipation of the imminent footsteps of Aurora coming up the stairs, and the air is silently silently silently - bustling with excitement. As the knot made by the darkness gradually untangles you heave a deep sigh, and the blog comes alive. - Don't Die Wondering

Need some sound for a rainy day? Feeling down and want to wallow in that misery but not become overwhelmed by it? Well I have just the thing for you, the San Francisco duo who go by the name Skeletal System.

I’m sure it won’t be too long before these guys are on people’s tongues, headphones and leading the way for all the modern crop of Grave Wavers. One thing that sets them apart from the rest of the their maudlin brethren is that amongst all of their darkness there’s still this almost sunny California disposition to it all. Now it’s slight, and it may have everything to do with their geography, but it’s interesting to note none the less!

If you needed some drone in your life, look forward to a refreshing blend of echoing keyboards and layers of rhythmic guitar patterns that build up like a snowstorm on their lengthy tracks. Skeletal System have a great vibe that hearkens back to those lesser known but fantastic annuls of the Factory records catalog.

The band currently has their debut, self-titled EP as a free download so you have no excuses why these guys shouldn’t already be in your iTunes playlist! Hopefully they’ll be making their way out East for some show sooner, rather than later. - Mishka Bloglin

I’m pretty excited about this new San Francisco band Skeletal System. I admittedly snoozed on checking out their free EP (available on Bandcamp for months now), but thankfully I got around to it. These guys have a sound that really draws you into this trance-like state. Particularly effective on this wet and windy Tuesday is “Dialogue,” with it’s dark, mesmerizing beat and chilly vocals. Andy Peterson, half of San Francisco’s duo Skeletal System sent me a nice email with a link to their free 5-song EP on Bandcamp. Been listening to it the whole way through this morning, and it’s great. Slow but rich, muted but textured, dark but dreamy electro with hints of New Order and Galaxie 500. Dig it. - Yvynyl
